Have you ever been to a place that had a big impact on your life? 🌍 For me, that place was 🇨🇭Switzerland where I spent a year between high school and college. While I loved my country, I always knew I wanted to live abroad to experience different cultures and places. Living in Switzerland for a year was not just about enjoying the best 🧀cheese and 🍫chocolate (though that was a bonus!). It was a life-changing experience that taught me some important things: 🌟 Being Open-Minded: I learned to appreciate different viewpoints and cultures. 🌟 Becoming Independent: Living in a foreign place made me more self-reliant. 🌟 Staying Curious: I developed a strong desire to explore new places and ideas. 🌟 Building Confidence: Adapting to new situations boosted my self-assurance. 🌟 Taking Risks: Stepping out of my comfort zone became easier. 🌟 Handling Challenges: Dealing with unexpected problems improved my problem-solving skills. This experience is one of the best things my parents did for me and it is something I hope to give my own kids someday. 🌴🇪🇸 Reflecting on my own experiences, I've been fortunate to embark on a thrilling global career journey that has transformed both my personal and professional life. 12 years ago, I took a leap of faith, quit my job, my home, took the kids out of school and went from the doom and gloom of the daily central line commute in London to the picturesque landscapes of Jamaica, eating jerk chicken and running a successful tourism business. After 7 years I decided I was ready for my next pivot and as you can see I don't do things by halves - so it was off to Spain where we currently live embracing ourselves in the Spanish culture eating tapas and paella whilst building my new business venture. The rewards of working in different countries have been immeasurable. Immersing myself in diverse and rich cultures has not only broadened my horizons but has also given me invaluable insights and perspectives that I wouldn't have gained otherwise. It has most definitely sculptured my personality, I now have more patience, and am a better listener as well as many, many other things I'm sure. 💼💪 A global career can have numerous benefits: cross-cultural communication skills, learning a new language, and gaining exposure to varied work environments. It definitely takes you out of your comfort zone and it is not easy, there can be a lot of self-doubt, that inner chatterbox and it comes with pressure but who doesn't love a challenge, right! I'm the happiest I have ever been and making a big move, although scary, can only enhance and contribute to your own personal growth and enrichment! 🌐 In today's interconnected world, the value of being adaptable and culturally sensitive cannot be overstated. Embracing a global mindset has not only enriched my career but has also enriched my life in ways I never imagined. So here's to the endless possibilities that a global career brings! 7 months ago, I took a career break and it changed my life I was working for the research division at the French consulate in Hong Kong & Macau This job was hard to get, it felt like a sense of achievement My parents invested so much in my education I carried their dreams and the weight of making them proud But when you finally make it, this heavy stone leaves an empty place Is it my path? How can I blow away these 10 years of hard work? A large part of my identity I took a break or... the break came to me as the only option The only option for realizing what I didn’t want to realize: I was changing It’s hard to acknowledge and even harder to accept But it is better to embrace it now than 10 years later. I let go of the safety net of this profession. I let go of my parents’ dream they had for me. I let go of others’ expectations. Now I embrace my fears. Now I take risks. Now I give myself a chance to create my own life. I don’t know what tomorrow will be made of, but I know I’ve never felt so alive as today. P.S. On choosing perspectives   Whenever I think about the power of perspective, a coffee chat with a friend comes to mind. Born and raised in Ireland, she was living in Australia at the time, and applying to transfer to Singapore, so that she would be “closer to home”. As an Italian living in Dublin, that stopped me in my tracks. Down the line, her point of view helped me reframe how I was looking at my own situation of expat.   Our perspectives shape how we understand the world.
