The safety measures for interventional team members have not kept up with the rise in scatter radiation in cath labs.
The growing number of procedures has led to a rise in associated health problems such as cancer, cataracts, cognitive impairment, and more. This has caused many medical students, including female doctors, to reconsider pursuing a career in #cardiology.
“As medical professionals, we are sworn to protect the health of all people, even each other…it always helps when the path to a sustainable solution is cost-effective, too. In this case, the costs for a comprehensive medical radiation safety overhaul are minimal compared to treating staff radiation injuries and losing the experience, expertise, and people...our world has come to depend upon.” - Prof. AVISHAG LAISH-FARKASH, Head of Electrophysiology, Cardiology Department at Samson Assuta Ashdod Public Hospital

Together with a group of medical students, I helped come up with a solution for a case titled: "if it's not a cesarean section, please refer" 👨⚕️
Our team's name was: "Ukukhuthaza" which is Xhosa for "to inspire"
We had to develop strategies to ensure better access to surgery in a district hospital in a rural town where cases that are non-cesarean are referred to regional hospitals. 🏥 Consequences of this are:
📌 patients needing surgery right away get referred but being transported could cost them their life.
📌 Bottleneck at the regional hospital which could have been prevented if more surgeries were done at district hospitals.
Our solution was to create mini-workshops that involved Medical officers teaching each other surgical procedures each Friday for an hour for the first three weeks of the month. 💡
Then the fourth week a consultant from a regional hospital would come to help supervise and evaluate the surgical procedure. This would take place over a period of 12 months. 📝
The surgical procedures where the Medical officers felt they lacked the most skill would be prioritized. In doing this Medical officers would become competent in additional surgical procedures to then perform them at the rural hospital. 🛏
I learned so much from all the medical doctors on our team. 🙌
Thank you to Prof Salome Maina, Dr. Lebo Moloi, and Prof Jackie Stewart. I learned a great deal from you. One key point that I took from their presentations was: 🗝
Even if you have successfully implemented a solution, it does not mean it will create an impact. That is what we ultimately want - IMPACT!!
A big thanks to UCT Surgical Society. To the organizing team - You did a brilliant job! Well done! 👏 👏 👏

“In medicine, the senior physician responsible for patient care is called the attending physician or the attending. The attending’s responsibility is to direct the clinical team’s attention to the most important things, take charge, make the patient feel attended to, and provide attentive care. Attending means showing up, being present, listening, and accompanying patients when it matters most. Attending is also a moral imperative: by being attentive, doctors not only provide the best care, they also honor each patient’s humanity.”

The College supported the Advancing the Surgical Workforce: 2023 UK Surgical Workforce Census Report, published today by The Royal College of Surgeons of England. The report paints a start picture of a surgical workforce working long hours and in stressful environments.
College President Mike McKirdy said: "The findings of this important report underline the intense challenges being felt by surgical teams across the UK.
"In addition to increasing theatre spaces and staff to help drive down waiting lists, we must ensure that we protect training time for all members of the surgical team: without quality, ‘on-the-job’ training, we simply won’t have the surgical workforce we need for the future."
