Quintessent is a pioneer in heterogeneous silicon photonics and quantum dot laser technology aimed at revolutionizing computing infrastructure. The rise of AI demands a shift in computing architectures to those designed for accelerated computing, highlighting the importance of efficient data movement. Quintessent aims to tackle the bottleneck in system performance by developing optical connectivity solutions that offer sustainability, reliability, and scalability. Quintessent differentiates itself with a focus on novel chip-scale laser architectures, particularly multi-wavelength quantum dot comb lasers, to address the demands of modern computing hardware. Founder and CEO, Alan Liu, advised on various photonics R&D programs for clients at DARPA and ARPA-E while at Booz Allen Hamilton. He met John Bowers while getting his PhD at UC Santa Barbara. Chairman John Bowers is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Materials at UCSB. He co-founded Aurrion (acquired by Juniper Networks), Aerius Photonics (acquired by FLIR Systems), and Terabit Technologies (acquired by Ciena). A belated shout out to NcodiN who has successfully secured €3.5 million from Elaia, Earlybird Venture Capital, and OVNI Capital. NcodiN has developed an optical interposer that enables high-bandwidth, low-latency optical data communications between chiplets within a processor package.  Its technology unlocks high-speed, reliable and energy-efficient data transmission for adopters, allowing the scaling of their high-end processor architectures dedicated to extremely heavy supercomputing workloads. This makes it possible to scale processor performance to meet the needs of high performance computing and AI — meets the evolving needs of scalers like Nvidia, Intel and Qualcomm — without the limitations of traditional electrical interconnects. Demonstration of a transportable cold atoms system for quantum simulators developed by Indian Startup. This system has been developed GDQ labs Pvt. Ltd. This will further develop into a cold atoms based Analog Quantum Computer (Quantum Simulator). Adaptability: Bardeen and Brattain's choice to immerse silicon in water emphasizes adaptability's importance. Innovators must be ready to pivot when needed. Building on Others' Work: Shockley, despite the bitterness, built on his colleagues' work, developing the bipolar transistor. Innovations often build on previous efforts. Societal Impact: The transistor transformed the world, laying the foundation for the information age and reshaping electronics. Recognition and Ego: Despite a shared Nobel Prize, the story hints at collaboration challenges. Recognition can be contentious, making ego management essential. Legacy of Innovations: Shockley's move from Bell Labs and founding Shockley Semiconductor shows innovations' broad effects. His company seeded what became Silicon Valley. Pathways of Innovators: Post-invention, the trio diverged—Shockley became an entrepreneur, Bardeen entered academia, and Brattain stayed at Bell Labs. Success has many routes. While industry cheerleaders dutifully propagandize about the latest optical computer (please see: https://lnkd.in/gQYZ6dwJ) or silicon photonics startups (please see: https://lnkd.in/gH2DsuFE), naturally, they are not nearly as conscientious in keeping track of those newcomers that are struggling, or worse (please see: https://lnkd.in/gJqtDkwz). A firm that has apparently been having a very difficult time lately and could easily portend the substantial challenges ahead, particularly for a focused strategy of SiPh married to a next-gen computer, is Luminous Computing. The company has chosen (doubtless wisely in hindsight) to keep a relatively low profile. Based on fibeReality’s intelligence gathering, Luminous had a large layoff around May of this year. Afterwards, there appears to have been an auction of various assets involving Silicon Valley Disposition (https://lnkd.in/gxqKSQ4W). Additionally, fibeReality is unaware of Luminous being able to move beyond its initial round of funding (raised over $100 million), and it is certain that the president has stepped down.

Some of the statements at the #quantumsummit23 from Bitkom „It’s very important that we have a strong industry in quantum technologies” states Anna Christmann. Frederick Struckmeier: „It is important that we have a better coordination between government, academics and industry“. And Nico Kelling from Infineon Technologies: “It’s deep tech, so we can’t slow down, we have to accelerate… and we need showcases which inspire”. So true and from QUTAC we completely agree, let’s double down on #quantumtechnologies.
