EEI President and CEO Dan R. Brouillette issued a statement following the package of final rules for power plants released today by EPA: “EPA’s suite of new regulations will affect the generation sources that will be used to reliably power America’s increasingly electricity-dependent economy, and we appreciate the agency’s efforts to align compliance deadlines to help companies make informed resource planning decisions that minimize customer costs. “While we appreciate and support EPA’s work to develop a clear, continued path for the transition to cleaner resources, we are disappointed that the agency did not address the concerns we raised about carbon capture and storage (CCS). CCS is not yet ready for full-scale, economy-wide deployment, nor is there sufficient time to permit, finance, and build the CCS infrastructure needed for compliance by 2032." This important white paper by former DPU Chair Paul Hibbard, former DOE Assistant Secretary for Policy and DPU Commissioner Susan Tierney and their expert team at the Analysis Group underscores the need for the kind of infrastructure investment outlined in National Grid’s recent ESMP filing – Future Grid -- to create the smarter, stronger, cleaner electric grid required to enable a just and equitable clean energy transition for Massachusetts. The paper also provides examples of how other states have established innovative regulatory models to ensure these critical investments get done in a timely manner and aren't unnecessarily delayed by challenges historically presented by our current approach. To build the grid of tomorrow that can accommodate the increased demand driven by electrification, seamlessly integrate cleaner power sources, and safeguard against increasingly frequent extreme weather events, we need to start investing today. The longer we wait, the more difficult it becomes to reach our ambitious clean energy, climate and reslience goals. NEW MODELING! Consistent with preliminary estimates that have been highlighted by the Shapiro administration, Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) modeling concludes that adoption of PACER and PRESS would meaningfully drive down carbon emissions from PA’s fleet of fossil-fired power plants, protect and grow clean energy jobs, and result in overall utility bill savings for consumers. In short, this package squarely meets the governor’s three-part test on climate and energy policy. https://lnkd.in/e74sqqmq
