💡 Did you know ❓🤔 🌊 On 26 December 2004, the world’s deadliest #tsunami occurred in the #indianocean, triggered by a massive earthquake off Sumatra. The waves, reaching up ⬆️ to 30 meters high and traveling 5,000 km, killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries. According to the U.S 🇺🇸 Geological Survey, the energy released during this seismic event was equivalent to the power of 23,000 Hiroshima-type atomic bombs. The disaster exposed the vulnerability of #coastalcommunities and #ecosystems to such events, and prompted global efforts to improve preparedness and resilience 🎯💪🏼 📡 Fast forward to the present day, recent advancements in space technology 🚀🪐 have become instrumental in #disasterriskmanagement. The National Remote Sensing Centre(NRSC) of the Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) organized a 'Capacity Building Workshop on Space Technology for Disaster Risk Management (DRM)’ from September 6 to 8, 2023. Satellites 🛰️ provide crucial data for early warnings and assessing natural disaster damage, contributing to building more resilient societies, especially for #IORA Member States.

What sensors are used to monitor volcanoes? 🌋 Monitoring volcanoes is complex, and it’s an important activity to ensure public safety in many areas of the world. It involves monitoring ground deformations, earthquakes and vibrations, volcanic gas, rock and water chemistry, and remote sensing from satellites. Volcano monitoring needs to be implemented on a continuous basis or in near-real-time, so what sensors are used to do so? Learn more - https://bit.ly/3HXryS3

Two coronal mass ejections (CMEs), originating from solar flares, have merged into a single, massive wave of magnetized plasma known as a cannibal CME. This cannibal CME, which includes a surprise "dark eruption," is currently on a collision course with Earth and is expected to trigger a significant geomagnetic storm when it reaches our planet today (July 18). The merging of these CMEs has resulted in an enlarged and intensified cloud of plasma, increasing the potential impact of the geomagnetic storm. 🌞 My Addition to the article: The implications of this event could include partial #radioblackouts and the occurrence of vivid #aurora displays at locations farther from Earth's magnetic poles than usual. Geomagnetic storms have the capacity to disrupt #communication systems, including #satellite and radio #communications, which may lead to temporary interruptions in various services relying on these technologies. It is important for individuals and organizations to stay informed about the developments and potential effects of this geomagnetic storm. Monitoring official space weather reports and following any necessary safety guidelines or precautions will be crucial during this period. 🕵️♀️ My question: How prepared do you believe we are as a society to effectively mitigate the risks associated with the potential impact of the approaching cannibal coronal mass ejection and the resulting geomagnetic storm⁉️ What measures do you think should be in place to enhance our readiness⁉️ https://lnkd.in/dmjxbnZh #solarstorm #geomaticstorm #Coronalmassejection #Space #spaceweather

March 1940 superstorm report highlighted in spaceweather.com I'm happy to say that spaceweather.com has chosen to highlight one of our recent papers ... THE GREAT SOLAR STORM OF MARCH 1940: This story is shocking. On March 24, 1940, a solar storm hit Earth so hard it made copper wires in the United States crackle with 800 volts of electricity. A New York Times headline declared that a "sunspot tornado" had arrived, playing havoc with any signal that had to travel through metal wires .... Read the rest at https://lnkd.in/g_rS6m7q Love, J. Each flare produced a radio blackout here on Earth, and we may see ongoing effects, if there were accompanying coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that hurled charged particles in our direction. Observations of the 2022 Tonga eruption air wave, taken from satellites GOES16, GOES17, METEOSAT and HIMAWARI8, have been used to validate our new atmospheric Lamb Wave Model. Improvements are evident when comparing with a standard Lamb model. Why a new Lamb Wave Model? Far field tsunamis are generated by Lamb waves, which in turn, are very sensitive to the properties of the atmosphere. An accurate tsunami model will require Lamb wave models that incorporate these atmospheric properties, including winds and topography. Our paper showing the new derived Lamb wave model and its corresponding numerical implementation (that runs in a ordinary PC) is here: https://lnkd.in/gjGBtWp8

A “severe” geomagnetic storm is now in progress, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) says satellites observed levels that reached level 4 on their 5-point scale of geomagnetic activity as of 11:37 a.m. CT. A series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) began on Wednesday (May 8) and have been Earth-bound ever since.
