🌿🌍 Call for Proposals! 🌍🌿 UN-REDD Programme – FAO Halting Deforestation, Degradation, and Emissions Team invites proposals for a study titled: "Analytical framework on Policy Coherence to halt deforestation: Aligning public expenditure and cross-sectoral strategies to meet climate change commitments in the AFOLU Sector". UN-REDD Programme, in collaboration with FAO ESA MAFAP team, we're developing a methodology for public expenditure analysis on forest conservation, restoration, and sustainable use. Current market standards within the VCM exhibit systemic issues with quantifying the real impact of nature-based projects. Recent media publicity is shedding light on this problem as a pervasive system-wide challenge, aligning closely with Compensate Foundation’s observations in the field. Since the inception of the project evaluation criteria for forestry projects in 2020, the Compensate Foundation has screened and evaluated 175 nature-based projects, and regrettably, more than 90% of these projects have fallen short and thus are unsuitable for offset use. The most significant weaknesses of nature-based projects are lack of additionality or unreliable baselines, both resulting in overcrediting. Other common problems are high permanence risks and community conflicts. #newsalert MERCURY MANAGEMENT REGULATIONS: REVISED DRAFT OUT FOR COMMENT The Department of Forestry, Fisheries & the Environment has called for input by 2 February 2024 on revised draft regulations among other things intended to domesticate the UN’s 2023 Minamata Convention on Mercury. According to the Government Gazette notice concerned, the latest iteration reflects some comments on a draft released in March 2023 for public comment. Once in force, the regulations are expected to go some way towards: * managing the release of mercury into the environment, and * reducing anthropogenic mercury emissions resulting from industrial and manufacturing processes. They will also provide for: * the phasing out of ‘mercury added products’  * the phasing down the use of dental amalgam, and * regulate mercury storage facilities. During the crucial seasons of spring and early summer, our interpreters play a pivotal role in Sweden's major forestry companies. They bridge the communication gap between experts and foreign subcontractors, facilitating the planting and thinning of forests. For every tree harvested, several are planted, ensuring a stable or increasing forested area.   Forestry is indispensable in Sweden, contributing significantly to the nation's economy, environment, and cultural heritage. Swedish forests are among the most extensive in Europe, covering about 70% of the country's land area, positioning Sweden as a leading global player in the forestry sector.   Forestry in Sweden is not just about economic gains but is deeply intertwined with environmental stewardship. The country's commitment to preserving its natural landscapes, including old-growth forests and wetlands, is a testament to this. Moreover, forestry practices in Sweden respect the rights and traditions of the indigenous Sami people, who have a profound cultural and economic connection to the forests.   Sweden holds just under one percent of the world's commercial forest areas but provides ten percent of the sawn timber, pulp, and paper traded on the global market. Forests and forestry are also important for climate change mitigation.   For many years, Polyglott ConInter has cooperated with the Swedish Forestry Agency, different forestry companies and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. 🌲📢 A coalition of nearly a dozen environmental groups is urging the Canadian government to expand its review of the forestry sector's emissions. In an open letter, signed by representatives from organizations like Nature Canada, they emphasize the need for a comprehensive examination of how forestry emissions are estimated. This call to action follows a report from the federal environment commissioner, recommending an independent review to assess the estimation and reporting of emissions related to logging. While the government acknowledges the importance of an independent review, it asserts that the underlying science of carbon reporting is peer-reviewed. Critics have long contested forestry sector emission reporting, particularly the practice of crediting the sector with absorbing emissions from naturally regrowing trees after wildfires. A recent study published in Frontiers found a significant disparity between reported emissions and actual contributions from the forestry sector. This discrepancy could have far-reaching implications for climate policy and environmental management. I had the pleasure to sit behind the European State Forest Association | EUSTAFOR flag today at the Forest and Forestry Sector Stakeholder Platform meeting in Brussels. Together with my Estonian colleague Kristi Parro we conveyed the State forests' message to the discussions. The most heated topic was the Deforestation Regulation. Stopping deforestation is a shared objective, that is not at question. According to the Regulation, its measures would need to be applied to the timber that is brought to the EU market at the end of this year. This while the crucial IT systems and country benchmarking, to be prepared by the Commission, would only be available at the very same time. This would seriously hamper the planning and development needed on forest owners' and industry's own IT systems and due diligence. Hopefully we can find a way to allow enough time for implementation. At the moment, it seems that pushing the date of application to the future would be the best solution.

CDP's latest report on the forestry agenda addresses the environmental performance of 55 Latin American regions who disclosed through CDP in 2022. We explore the drivers of deforestation and the policies, mechanisms and actions being taken to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in their territories. #Posts Error Log: Exposing the methodological failures of REDD+ forestry projects A briefing based on research carried out by the University of California (UC) Berkeley Carbon Trading Project and funded by Carbon Market Watch. It systematically assesses the effectiveness of the four most popular project-based methodologies by the standard body Verra to generate carbon credits from projects that protect forests (REDD+). The research uncovered how Verra grants developers a large amount of flexibility when estimating emission reductions, explaining how this has resulted in over-crediting, and how auditors are left with the freedom to limit their assessment to a “tick the box exercise”. As Verra is currently in the process of revising its approach to REDD+, CMW makes a series of recommendations that would improve the quality of their project methodologies targeting how the factors of baselines, leakage, forest carbon accounting, permanence and safeguards should be considered.
