I know AI has always been a hot topic in the creative world, but after #AdobeMax this week, I am feeling both excited and a little uneasy about the new features, so I’m going to brain dump below: Generative fill is a powerful tool that was launched earlier this year (which I have used and it IS really cool), but where do these images that seemingly appear out of thin air come from? After digging into it a little more, I feel better knowing that since it is "trained on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content, Firefly is designed to be safe for commercial use." And that Adobe has "developed a compensation model for Adobe Stock contributors whose content is used in the dataset to retrain Firefly models" to get paid for the work they've created that gets pulled into other people's work through this feature. I also applaud the creation/use of Content Credentials to ensure transparency in whether AI was employed to create a piece (or portion of it), and truly hope it does become the widespread standard they want it to. BUT, I have to admit, the new Text to Vector feature makes me a little nervous. Up until this feature, to my knowledge, you couldn't alter something AI generated for you (except by altering your prompt). With Text to Vector, you can type a prompt and it creates a very detailed, fully editable vector (you can change color, edit points, etc.). My jaw literally dropped during the Keynote presentation that unveiled this. I see that it could be a really powerful "jumping off point" for designers, but I'm wondering if instead of enabling creativity, if it will unintentionally hurt it. Will the use of the pen tool become obsolete because you can just type what you want rather than creating it yourself? Will designers portfolios become fabricated with art they didn’t fully possess the skills to create? And what's to prevent someone with little to no design skill from going into Illustrator, typing in what they want, making no changes and then passing it off as their work (or even worse, selling it as theirs)? My concerns aren’t necessarily related to job security—though that could certainly be valid—more design integrity. I know many of my peers can spot something that was created in Canva from a mile away because of the stock assets/aesthetic, and I would hate to see this more widespread. While designers may utilize AI as a tool, I hope it is just a step in the process, rather than the end result. Hey Connections 👋 Adobe has announced that it will integrate generative AI into its popular Photoshop program. The company will incorporate its generative AI product, Adobe Firefly, into Photoshop, creating a tool that will act as a “co-pilot” to graphic design rather than replacing humans. The new feature, called “generative fill,” will allow users to add, expand, or remove unwanted items from images using text prompts. The feature will be available in the desktop beta starting Tuesday, with a wider release planned for later in 2023. Adobe has been using AI in its tools for over a decade and has trained the Firefly AI on 100 million images from Adobe’s stock library and public domain images to avoid copyright issues. The integration of Firefly into Photoshop will enable quicker edits to photos and the creation of images and templates from scratch. Adobe aims to help small businesses accelerate their graphic design process with this tool, but it is not intended to replace graphic designers entirely. Adobe has also implemented content credentials to mark images that have been created or edited using AI, ensuring transparency and authenticity. Adobe positions generative AI as the core of creativity and unveils new AI-based tools. This week, Adobe announced several AI-related updates to its main products. They've added three new AI features to Firefly, their AI imaging tool. They also made improvements to Illustrator, Adobe Express, and enhanced Photoshop's ability to turn text into pictures. These updates were introduced at Adobe's annual MAX event in Los Angeles. Other big tech companies like Google and Microsoft are also adding AI capabilities to their main products. Adobe's CEO, Shantanu Narayen, said at the event that the aim of this technology is to help creators in their work, making it easier and better. During the event, Adobe showcased several AI tools, including the new Firefly Image 2. This tool can create very detailed and high-quality images, like realistic pictures of people. People can test Firefly Image 2 online now, and soon it will be part of Adobe's Creative Cloud apps. Adobe also introduced two other tools in Firefly for creating design templates and vector images. One special thing about the vector tool is that it can make illustrations from written instructions. Adobe thinks businesses might use this for making graphics for ads and other designs. Earlier in the year, Adobe launched Firefly, a set of AI tools for creating different types of content, from images to audio. Since then, people have made over 3 billion images with Firefly. It's similar to other AI tools like DALL-E and Stable Diffusion. Adobe is being careful about adding AI to its famous products. They release early versions to get feedback from users and make the tools better. The content in Firefly comes from Adobe's own library, free materials, and older content that anyone can use. Narayen said that Adobe is very careful and transparent about how they use data to train their AI tools. Additionally, Adobe Express will soon have a feature that turns text into design templates. Adobe Lightroom will also get a new tool to make photos look like they were taken with an expensive camera. Adobe introduced another product called GenStudio, which helps big companies create a lot of content while keeping it consistent. It combines several of Adobe's other tools.
