I’m officially 2/2 for getting laid off right before I leave for a vacation in 2023. This time I learned how to surf for a week. Wiped out. Stood up. Surfed. Sunburned. It was a huge success. Post surf trip, I’m not looking for a new job, and instead looking to start my own agency. IMO there’s a huge opportunity for b2b companies to generate inbound sales by having leadership and specific employees posting on LI. Instead of paying thousands to podcasts, influencers, and burning money on paid ads - companies should build their own b2b influencers. I’m looking for my first client so I can generate a strong case study. Work with me for 3 months and I will a) grow your team’s LI profile followers and start building a reliable inbound channel for leads b) be your content engine, creating a ton of tailored, extremely relevant content that your team can reuse in deals and marketing materials.  c) position your company as thought leaders You basically get a Sr. PMM on your team, managing a channel + creating relevant content for your socials. They were just starting out and needed partnerships badly – and of course, 𝐼 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑦! One day, I decided to step up and think outside the box to get brands and businesses to sign up for our partnership opportunity. I researched keywords for influencer marketing agencies and pinpointed our target audience. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭? I didn’t stop there. I dug deeper and found specific keywords for each targeted audience. With my list ready, I created a detailed and organized Google Sheet, then headed to Apollo.io to generate targeted leads. Still, 𝐼 𝑑𝑖𝑑𝑛'𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑝. I confirmed their email addresses using mailinator.com to make sure we were hitting the right inboxes. 𝐍𝐨𝐰, 𝐭ℎ𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐥. If I could've done one thing differently when I was Head of Marketing for a startup: 👉 I would have invested more in the SDR function More time with messaging More time with targeting More resources into training More resources into hiring With all the hype around demand creation and all the hate around SDRs/cold calling, it's easy to ignore it. But I've also seen it work. And it works because the work put in by marketing: 👉 Messaging 👉 Segmentation 👉 Targeting is key to the SDR role too. When you give SDRs the tools they need to do great work, then SDRs as a channel can work. Then again, hindsight is 20/20 and being a Head of Marketing at a startup is weird and fun and exhausting and a practice in grounding. You told the VC you were "going to 10x our ARR through channels A, B & C" They sent a rejection saying they "weren't comfortable you could grow at the pace they look for" Why?... they didn't believe you. Below are 3 reasons why: 1️⃣ You mentioned too many channels ❌ "We're going get customers through ads, influencers, sales and refferals" 💡 This sounds like you have no idea and are saying anything you can think of 2️⃣ No evidence that the channels you mentioned work ❌ "We'll run our first influencer campaign after the round..." 💡 Why should someone believe that things you haven't tested will work? 3️⃣ Your mention channels don't present a plan ❌ VC: So how many sales people will you need? Founder: Um... 💡 If you don't seem like you've thought deeply about it, why should anyone trust you? Here's an approach that IS convincing. Pick 1 or 2 channels and walk through each one: a. Explain how many customers you plan to get from the channel b. Provide evidence that it will work (historical success, pipeline etc., tests) c. Explain what resources you'll need to achieve your target customer count It could sound something like this... "Our main customer acquisition channel will be sales. We plan to onboard 100 customers through this channel by the next round. We know direct sales work because in the last year I've consistently been able to get 2 customers a month spending just 40% of my time on sales. We think a full time sales hire should be able to get 4 -5 sales a month once they are onboarded. So we plan to hire 2 soon after the round which should comfortably get us to 100+ new customers in the 18 months."
