This is interesting (to me, and I suspect to quite a few colleagues and associates who are as nerdy about this stuff as I am!).
The video shows a new zebra crossing that we installed recently. It was substantially completed a few weeks back but there has been a delay in the delivery of the belisha beacons, so what we have here is the zebra markings, the zig zags, and a temporary sign warning of an uncontrolled crossing.
Traditionally the approach, in this situation, would have been to barrier off the crossing, and tell pedestrians that they are not to use it until all the infrastructure is in place. On this occasion I requested that it was left un-barriered, on the basis that a) pedestrians tend to use the incomplete crossings anyway, walking around the barriers, so all that approach does inconvenience and potentially exclude some people. And b) without the belishas, the crossing is not a million miles from being a side-road/simplified crossing, as trialled in certain areas in the UK, as commonplace in Europe and as championed for mainstreaming by many designers and active travel advocates. So I wanted to see if/how this one might work.
I stood near the crossing for around 15 minutes (incognito, no hi-vis!) and observed around 15 crossings by pedestrians. In some cases there were no vehicles there to give way, but on every single occasion (about 10) that a vehicle was present, the driver gave way to people about to cross.
It's just one location, and just one occasion, but this local evidence just adds to my conviction that side road/simplified zebra crossings would be a fantastic and cost-efficient tool in our inventory. As I've said before, low-cost, high-impact interventions are what we desperately need to be rolling out, at pace, across the country to facilitate more active journeys.
I know Chris Boardman MBE and Brian Deegan are keen - let's make it happen! Is anywhere else in the UK trialling these, formally?

Do you think Austin residents are walking less?
According to #axiosaustin we are
From an article in Feb of 2024:
"There's been a staggering decline in the number of trips Austin residents take by putting one foot in front of the other, per a new report, writes Axios' Alex Fitzpatrick and Kavya Beheraj.
Driving the news: The number of annual average daily walking trips per 1,000 people in the Austin metro area dropped 37.5% between 2019 and 2022, per a new StreetLight Data report.
There were 200 average daily walking trips per 1,000 people in 2022, compared to 320 in 2019.
That's an even steeper decline than the national average, which dropped 36% during the same period.
How it works: StreetLight measures travel behavior based on anonymized data from mobile devices, vehicle GPS systems and more.
For this analysis, one "walking trip" is any trip taken by foot that is more than 250 meters — about 820 feet — from start to finish"
