Entertainment Executive | Music Tech & AI | Streaming & DSPs | Artist & Label Relations | Recorded Music & Publishing

Last Friday's episode of The New York Times' tech podcast Hard Fork is a must listen. Recording Industry Association of America® (RIAA) Chairman & CEO Mitch Glazier spoke about the dynamics re: the Suno & Udio lawsuits. Some things that struck me in the interview: - There are no shortage of analogies to describe how training data is used in AI models ("if you make chicken salad, you have to pay for the chickens.") - Last year's Supreme Court ruling on transformative usage is important here as a precedent. That's obvious, but I wonder what the RIAA's tactic would have been without it. - This new generation of the music industry is very pro-tech, and even pro-AI. They don't want to shut down the tech, they want to shut down bad AI business models. - It's more than third parties using IP. It's about giving artists & rights holders control, monetization opportunities, & a mechanism to opt out. - "There's a right way and a wrong way to do things. The door is open for the right way." - It's going to take awhile to reach a decision, a year or two. It's important to have a legal decision so the industry can move forward with this obviously exciting tech. Listen below ⬇ #musicindustry #musicbusiness #musicAI #GenAI

But isn't it more like they're making a "mystery poultry dish" and pretending it's not chicken? 😄

Actually the chickens aren’t paid for their noble sacrifice. The farmers are paid. Let’s hope musicians aren’t the chickens…

Drew, thanks for sharing. To one of your points, I've seen several people asking what is the difference between humans and AI being trained on copyrighted material. Let's see if the Defendants use that argument as well.

Fascinating insights on the evolving relationship between AI and the music industry, highlighting the importance of balancing innovation with artists' rights and monetization.

As expected. The lawsuit was the right call. There surely is a right way to do business, and the music industry is simply ready for reinvigoration
