Initial thoughts: ePitching event…meh...probably a huge meeting, and you are just a number on a huge list. AND probably the remote presentation makes it lose even more of its focus 😑 But then... We were encouraged by our European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) Project Officer to apply, and we've really been impressed by the actual event concept and organization itself: It is a very focused group of very exciting companies in the field (obviously ourselves, but also AMT Medical, Aortyx, NIMBLE Diagnostics, Healium Medical and Xeltis) - all focused on the common fight against #Cardiovascular and #Respiratory diseases. Moreover, the event is adjudicated by a panel that includes the investors themselves. And we were concomitantly coached by the competent crowd of Dealflow.eu and facilitated by EurA AG and EuroQuity - Bpifrance. And a rehearsal meeting really got the presentation juices flowing (for lack of a better metaphor). 🥣 Proof is in the pudding: we have already been approached by two participating investors for a 1-on-1 and another two additional investors that just saw the event being advertised! 🌍 Scaling Up Innovation in LMICs 🌱 Last week, I attended a webinar by Challenge Works on #scalinginnovation in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Among many insights shared, some core lessons jumped out at me. I’ve bundled them into 3 buckets: 📈 Scaling & Measurement - How do you define scale? In social innovation, defining scale goes beyond the conventional measure of increased sales (a private sector standard); it encompasses creating impactful change on multiple fronts, including social and environmental. - Measuring scale effectively requires a robust theory of change — a roadmap of your intended path to impact. - 3 key barriers to scaling: organizational, infrastructural, and institutional. - The Afri-Plastic Challenge illustrates these concepts, where scale was defined as "“Achieving the conditions (organizational form, size, capacity & capabilities, business model, partnerships & networks, capital & finance) that unlock efficiencies and allow delivery of plastic waste management solutions in a socially and environmentally responsible way”  -Spotlighted scaling strategies: out, up, and deep. 🔗 Complementary Innovation Offerings: - Challenge prizes offer an important advantage to innovators: visibility & endorsement  - For successful scaling in LMIC contexts, innovations and models need to be tailored to the local context, and not simply a replication of a successful model from developed countries. - Consider innovation bundles: this is an idea I come across more and more frequently; bundling or packaging innovations together with other complementary solutions to make their uptake more appealing and useful.  - Understand the restrictions & limitations of the local context; innovation in resource-constrained sectors requires innovation in itself. 🤝 Stakeholder Engagement & Partnerships: - For localization of innovations, strong stakeholder engagement is crucial.  - Aligning stakeholder needs and refine your ability to articulate the value proposition to each.  - Build partnerships across the value change but stay focused on your main challenge area. This is just WONDERFUL and SO VERY much deserved. Believe it or not, ECP was lined up to take a big stake in OrthoTreat 2YEARS AGO but fraudster Hari İyer and Hadigy Ltd so unfortunately turned our plans upside down. At the time, the young CEO, Sahar Meiron, came to visit with me in Istanbul. We got on really well...I was thoroughly impressed with him, his team and their cutting edge technology. We even talked about helping OrthoTreat find alternative manufacturing and distribution capability (the latter particulary in Africa) other than "Big Pharma", a very good example of ECP seeking to bring true value add to investment partners vs the typical VC throw money at it and hope for the best and/or interfere if our investors are not getting the promised financial returns.. I know this company really well and can tell you that, in my opinion, OrthoTreat is a UNİCORN in the making if ever there was one! Furthermore, the likelihood of them being acquired by a big pharma company is, again in my opinion, very high. Bravo Sahar and team. Onward and very surely upward.........
