Dear employees, partners, and friends,   In view of the recent election results in Germany and Austria, we as a company see it as our responsibility to take a stand. These results have shown that issues such as xenophobia and marginalisation have once again moved more strongly into the public discourse. As a company that is deeply rooted in the European idea and firmly believes in the values of diversity, tolerance and cooperation, we would like to clearly state our position.   In the following lines, we would like to explain why we have decided to publish this statement. It is very important for us to raise our voice and take a stand against hatred and marginalization. We want to set an example and make our contribution to respectful and cosmopolitan coexistence.   As a company, we firmly believe that diversity, openness and cooperation are the cornerstones of a successful and sustainable society. We are in favour of open-minded coexistence and a strong European community in which every person - regardless of origin, gender, religion or ideology - is respected and valued.   We firmly reject all forms of hatred, discrimination and marginalisation. Our aim is to create a working environment in which all employees feel safe and respected. We promote intercultural exchange and are actively committed to tolerance and mutual understanding.   For us, European co-operation is more than just an economic advantage - it is a symbol of peace, solidarity and shared values. By working in partnership across national borders, we want to contribute to the strengthening and further development of Europe.   Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is reflected not only in our corporate culture, but also in our business relationships and the way we fulfil our responsibility to society. During all the times I‘ve spent at the external borders of Europe, I‘ve realised that those values only counts for us as privileged white Europeans. While people are fleeing from violence, war, oppression and poverty, we lock them up in camps like here on #Lesvos with a lack of access to basic needs, education and healthcare. Sometimes for years. Afterwards we tell the people they have to integrate themselves in our society otherwise they would not be accepted in our society. Instead of building up intercultural bridges and connections to make #integration accessible and collective, we lock the people up again. Is our migration system a role model for „How not to do it“ or are we just opportunistic instead of living through our values of humanity? Europe Cares eV. 🧡

Made in Germany - made by Diversity. It's time to take a stand! The current demonstrations against the rise of right-wing extremism in Germany are also affecting the local economy. It has been clear for a long time that this is not only a democratic threat, but also an economic one. GEORG has decided that we need to take a stand right now. Since the influx of refugees in 2015, German society has been visibly drifting apart. With the AfD, a right-wing populist party has established itself in the Bundestag and people are stirring up a daily mood against migrants on social media. Some are also openly talking about curtailing the rule of law. All of this was previously unthinkable. In contrast, there are people who stand up for open coexistence and tolerance. GEORG has positioned itself on this side. As a company with strong exports, it has a completely different view of the global world. "We are proud of our diverse and inclusive corporate culture and stand up for freedom, tolerance, partnership and diversity worldwide,” explains CEO Mark Georg. “I expressly condemn any form of xenophobia, extremism and anti-Semitism." There is hardly a country in which there is no GEORG machine and in which no GEORG employee has worked. Germany, with its unique historical context, has a profound responsibility to confront and reject all forms of hate, including anti-Semitism and racism. The odd couple: German far right shows an unlikely affinity for Communist China A long read from me on a phenomenon which has fascinated me for a long time: the love-in between Germany's AfD and the CCP. The beauty of working in Brussels in August is that you actually have time to work on those stories you've been meaning to do, but couldn't because you're being beaten to death by the news cycle. This was one of those. A main takeaway from me is that we Europeans too often transpose the traditional left-right political spectrum onto modern China. I see this in the European Parliament a lot and among left-leaning political parties. Take Sinn Fein in Ireland, for example, who seem to find more common ground with autocratic but nominally left-wing China than with Taiwan, the small island off the coast that is being threatened with invasion. Similarly with the AfD: it is initially jarring to see a far-right party espouse such positive views on the world's most successful Communist Party. But it makes a bit more sense when you consider that today's CCP is a deeply conservative entity. As Katja Drinhausen told me: "The hard leftists within China are in many ways much closer to European conservatives when it comes to top down governance, strong leaders in strong positions, putting the economy first, thinking about the collective good, having this nationalist streak, and being quite anti-woke and anti-individual." So China does not neatly fit into these boxes, it appeals to both far-left and right. A weird phenomenon to observe over the course of Covid-19 and beyond is the evolution of the horseshoe theory in politics, where the far-left and right find more areas to agree on than disagree. It's obvious on things like vaccines and lockdowns, but also in some instances on China. In Germany, the far left and right are on the same pro-China page. Why? A combination of anti-American whataboutery, fascination with illiberal regimes, and Germany First economic policy that is different to its US equivalent. Parts of the AfD see China as an essential market for German companies to make money in. When the AfD sent a first-ever delegation to China in June, it barely made the news. But it showed a sense of opportunism in Beijing: this party is riding high in the polls, we'd better get to know them. It also offered the AfD some sort of international acceptance, which they have rarely had among major powers. But not everyone is on board. One AfD MEP in Brussels told me: “I never joined the AfD to lick the boots of some Communist Party. That is, for me a total no go." The candle demonstration symbolized a pivotal moment in history, serving as a bold declaration of resistance against oppression and a rallying cry for change. 🕊️ The significance of Struggle For Human Rights Day extends beyond the events of 1988, echoing the enduring struggle of the Slovak people for self-determination and democratic governance. 🌍 The historical backdrop of Slovakia is marked by periods of political upheaval and external influences, from the Hapsburg-ruled empire to German occupation during World War II, followed by Communist rule and eventual liberation by the Soviet army. Despite facing numerous challenges and setbacks, the resilience of the Slovak people persevered, culminating in the establishment of the Slovak Republic on January 1, 1993. This pivotal moment ushered in a new era of democratic reform, symbolizing the triumph of the human spirit over tyranny and oppression. 🌟 As we reflect on the legacy of Struggle For Human Rights Day, let us honor the courage and determination of those who bravely fought for the principles of freedom, equality, and justice.
