Retiring from employment can be liberating, but it doesn't mean we stop working altogether. It's about choosing what we want to do, when we want to do it. Surprisingly, many younger people wish they could retire already. Let's enjoy our careers and the journey, or change it up if we want, but let's not wish our lives away. As someone who just retired, I'm learning how to think about what I want to do without feeling like I should be doing something all the time. It's quite liberating to be free from a fixed working structure. I have some plans for what I want to do, but I'm taking it gradually.

Retiring at 50? Why Not Start a New Career? The traditional idea of retirement is going away. More and more people over the age of 50 are choosing to "retire" from their current jobs and start a new career they've always wanted. -You've always wanted to own your own business? -You want to work remotely, or be closer to your kids and grandkids? -You’re looking to work in an industry for which you’ve always had a passion? In your new over-50 job, you can finally put those factors front-and-center. Our FD is looking to retire somewhere toward next Easter / Summer latest - when should we start thinking about kicking off the recruitment process? Well probably about now. Really?? It's miles away!! Timing is key. Let's say you start the recruitment discussions and briefing a consultant early October 2023. They do a thorough search and your 1st stage interviews kick off. Then 2nd stages need sorting. Then offers and contracts. All goes to plan and you are in a position to make someone an offer in November. That person is likely on a 3 month notice so best case they can start mid Feb. You build in a 4 to 6 week phased handover - everyone shakes hands happily in the April. No issues, no stress. Steve heads off to his retirement villa and Emma picks up the reins smoothly (*other FD names are available). You also build in a little bit of contingency - let's say the process is slower than you hope or the successful candidate has a change of heart. Or someone you love is on a 6 month notice.... You still have chance to restart and have it boxed by May / June. You've built an element of flexibility to have it nailed by the summer deadline. What happens A LOT is that you wait to start that process in the new year. And that creates time pressure on the process. Sometimes businesses call me and only want to see candidates on a short notice or immediately available. They narrow the pool dramatically. They also put pressure on the hiring decision - knowing that you are under a tight timeframe forces your hand which makes a poor hiring decision easier to make. Sometimes circumstance means you have to move faster than you might have hoped but often it's avoidable just by kicking the process off. Great businesses / managers that hire and retain most successfully are all over the front end timing.

How to become financially independent (and retire early): - Plan for your finances that you need to retire with. - Go nonlinear and explore different careers. - Get back to work in a new career. - Rinse and repeat. Don’t retire early to never work. Rather retire early to create a new career path for yourself. Try this with this goal and see how much you enjoy your journey of FIRE.

Post age 50, you are likely to get fired! You will get a Pink Slip before you turn 50 and disgracefully ask to leave your job. At the airport today, I met this young man happily explaining that his company is "NOW" framing fundamentals for the aging workforce. All this, so that they can work till they retire! And I was like; NOW? Were not they supposed to work till they retire? And, he was like, Ours is a modern company! What the "Fusk" ! Modern! New Age! AI ! But some companies are head over heels to hire younger ones than hiring an old age? This trend is scary. That is a warning to replan retirements. After all, in the pyramid of hierarchy where everyone joins at the bottom, very few make it to the top. That means fewer older folks are part of the workforce and handful make to the top. That means the remaining were churned out by the system - to take a forced retirement. Only a handful companies are making friendly policies. It's a wake up call for all of us. To replan. Retiring to do nothing is overrated Met with a “retiring” local executive last week They understood this The idea of having a “next chapter” It’s not the end of the book Like most, they’re currently working over 60 hours a week ❌ Going from 60 hours → 0 is crazy to them ✔️ The focus is on having the time and resources to do what they want We had a collaborative meeting and ran through some “What Ifs”: ◾ Full retirement, even if just to be their “base” scenario. ◾ Taking a few years off, then coming back to work ◾ Switching to part-time consulting for a while ◾ Where do their travel plans come in? ◾ Possible “long-term care” needs ◾ When to claim Social Security ◾ Downsizing vs not Other advisors had been quick to say “you’re good, don’t worry about it” instead of running collaborative planning sessions. The client is good at making decisions, they just needed an expert to make sure they didn’t miss anything and to handle the execution. I’m excited for their next chapter, and thankful to be working together!
