Can seaweed be used in #carbonremoval? That’s what DNV are exploring with in a pilot project with SINTEF Ocean and industry partners. The mooring lines are finally in place and we are ready to go🌊

Oceans can help remove CO2 from the atmosphere through different pathways: micro- and macro-algae farming, ocean alkalinity enhancement, blue carbon restoration, etc. Our colleagues in SINTEF Ocean have built a seaweed farm on the coast of Trøndelag (Norway) to test large-scale kelp cultivation in real conditions. This infrastructure will be used in the NCS C+ project (https://lnkd.in/dmwYjWaB), to understand the potential of algae-based bioCCS to deliver negative emissions and at what cost. Because of the urgent global calls to fight climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels, more and more companies in the aquaculture industry are using solar energy. Solar energy is a very necessary and viable alternative because of the benefits it provides: low operation cost, long life- cycle, environmental friendliness, no CO2 emissions, and low soil contamination. Creating valuable content is one of my favourite things to do. It requires a lot of effort, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to showcase SPS in unique & engaging ways. There’s so much involved in commissioning these renewable energy solutions - so many teams, so many talented minds. Beyond audience engagement, one of the highlights for me is seeing SPS staff get excited about the content. It puts things into perspective - showing their collective efforts have led to impactful success, and they feel proud to be part of the organization. On the OLAMUR project and multi-use of European ocean space: "One demonstration site is in the Danish part of the Kriegers Flak wind farm in the Baltic Sea. This is one of the largest offshore wind sites in Europe. OLAMUR builds on the work of earlier, smaller projects that focused on the engineering challenges of placing aquaculture systems in wind farms.  The team will study the growth rates and yields of mussels and seaweed as well as their quality. This will involve assessing their nutrient profiles and checking for harmful contaminants to ensure marketability." https://lnkd.in/dj98QXYZ

🌊 MoorPower Deployed 🌊 Carnegie is excited to announce that our #MoorPower ocean energy technology has been successfully deployed and is operating at our test site in the waters off North Fremantle. 🌊 MoorPower generates electricity from the waves, replacing diesel generators for offshore operations. That means lower carbon emissions, lower risk and significant cost reductions for industry. The project, supported by the Blue Economy CRC Is an industry-ready application for our unique #CETO wave energy technology. Aquaculture, including offshore fisheries are a key application and we’re honoured to be supported in the project by Huon Aquaculture Company Pty Ltd. and Tassal Group as potential first adopters for the technology. Carnegie CEO Jonathan Fievez said the deployment completed yesterday had been a success. “The deployment of our MoorPower technology is a significant milestone in the challenge of decarbonising offshore operations, it is an important step in bringing our technology to the world,” says Fievez. “We have listened to the needs of industry operating in isolated offshore environments and adapted our unique CETO technology to their requirements. MoorPower will reduce or eliminate the need for fossil fuels, reduce carbon emissions, reduce risk and drive down cost.” This deployment is a significant milestone and will validate the technology in advance of commercial rollout in aquaculture and other offshore industries. 🌿🌊 A new #experimental #seaweed farm, #JIPSeaweedCarbonSolutions, has been established off the coast of #Trøndelag, #Norway, focusing on large-scale #kelp cultivation as a potential #solution for #carboncapture and #carbonstorage. 📌 The #project involves a #collaboration between researchers and industry players SINTEF, DNV, Equinor, Aker BP ASA, Wintershall Dea, and Ocean Rainforest, with a budget of NOK 50 million. 💡🌍 The #goal is to develop a verified #methodology for #carbon capture and storage through seaweed #aquaculture, specifically targeting the transformation of seaweed into #biochar for soil improvement. https://lnkd.in/dA-v8jJp

Ecological Aquaculture LLC Press Release February 12, 2024 Ecological Aquaculture LLC is proud to be a part of the group of 20 scientists representing 23 institutions from throughout the world who worked on Chopin et al. (2024) "Deep-ocean seaweed dumping for carbon sequestration: Questionable, risky, and not the best use of valuable biomass." One Earth (2024), https://lnkd.in/eQ5hZTS6 Ecological Aquaculture LLC joins the call for a moratorium on sinking farmed and fished seaweeds to deep-sea ecosystems which the scientific team labelled as a “misguided notion of significant carbon sequestration”, and a false and dangerous type of ‘‘blue washing.’’ Sinking seaweeds to ocean ecosystems is a new type of ocean dumping. Stated plans and well-funded pilot efforts are underway that garner carbon credits which would sink millions or more of tons of farmed and fished seaweeds to the deep sea. Scientists in the One Earth paper stated that there is insufficient knowledge on impacts to the functionality of fragile, little known deep-sea ecosystems, their biodiversity, and the ecosystem services they provide. The ocean engineering for sinking mostly buoyant seaweeds thousands of meters to the deep sea is fanciful. Multiple legal challenges to ocean dumping at many jurisdictional levels are likely to occur. The conclusions are that the large investments and surrounding "hype" in sinking seaweeds to deep sea ecosystems as a 'quick fix’ climate solution is not based on sound science and that the practice presents unacceptable risks to not only deep-sea ecosystems but also to the future of more rational, effective policy and investment actions that could ensure the sustainable growth of the seaweed aquaculture industry. Ecological Aquaculture LLC believes that seaweeds are treasures, not trash.
