Consumers want products that work. This shouldn’t be controversial to say, but look around and it might be. The Rabbit R1 and Humane AI Pin are just two examples of this — Marques Brownlee (number 1 YouTube tech guy) called them, and I quote: - “The worst thing I’ve ever reviewed” - “Barely reviewable” - “Just awful” Spin it however you like, but these products show the stark difference between “shipping early” and “shipping too early”. Here’s the distinction for founders, I think, to remember: - Iterative deployment — yes. - Expansive ideas that shoot for societal-level change — a big yes. - Believing your own hype — no. - Charging full price for unfinished products — a big no. Take Sam Altman. He recently said the quality of ChatGPT-4 is ‘embarrassing’ — but we users don’t mind because the product still meets reasonable expectations. But when expectations are totally violated, people will turn to social media to criticise products swiftly and brutally. And these pile-ons can and do kill potentially exciting orgs. So yes, ship early. But, for the time being… …not too early.

While the long-term effects of ChatGPT on various industries are still unfolding, Google's recent $60M purchase of Reddit user content offers some interesting insights into the future of search. This move suggests that even Google, the long-time authority on search, is struggling to understand the current landscape and how to serve up the best search results. Google now is experimenting with utilizing user-curated content to direct traffic to mixed reception but a human-in-the-loop search could be the future. Personally my recent experiences with Google and YouTube search can be summed up in one word: rough. To me feels like we're at a crossroads and while I don't have a crystal ball I do know that the current search status quo won't continue much longer. The Rebel: Behold the Rebel, the free spirit who challenges the norm. Even when they return a cart, it's a defiant act – askew and messy.
