I love food and recruiting world-class sales teams, and one of my bucket list items is dining at a Michelin-star restaurant. Building a world-class sales team is no small task. It's like finding the perfect ingredients for a Michelin-star dish. If you miss one thing, the whole process can fall apart. There's a science and an art to it – Understanding market trends, knowing the right places to find talent, and possessing the uncanny ability to identify potential from a mile away. Moreover, there's the delicate balancing act of ensuring that each member brings something unique to the table and mixes well with the rest of the team. And when this magical mix comes together? You've got yourself a powerhouse of a sales team that can dominate a market! Recruiting is more than just about putting butts in seats. It's about shaping futures and influencing success for individuals and companies alike.

Top 3 reasons why sales people get terminated (food service sales specific): 1. Driving Record - If you can't drive, you can't work. 2. Poor Work Ethic - If it's Friday and you're golfing, or sitting at home, or you slack off at 3 every day because "restaurants are prepping for dinner" you won't work for very long. This is why most miss their numbers. 3. Not executing corporate programs - If they tell you to do something, do it to the best of your ability. Don't fight it. You will lose. You'll notice that none of this is impossible to overcome and none of it has to do with natural talent or training. Most people are scared to go in to sales because "they don't know if they can do it." You can. And you can make a lot of money doing it. Just work at it as much as you work at your current career and you'll be fine.

Every single day we are in touch with sales activity ... either doing it actively or experiencing it passively on the buyers side. My wish is for more people to realise it sooner rather than later, that everyone is 'selling' something, just like validly pointed out by Kevin Meyer in his post below. It has been 8 years since I began my career in sales, years of passion in sales. It is not about job; it is about every step I take in my career with love. 8 years ago, I started in the tech industry and discovered every value and how it reflects on every industry. 8 years of experience working in the food and beverage industry and exploring this industry, which is the most industry you will learn the most from. It is not about sales and work; it is about passion.

Within any role there are some things that are important. Whether you are in Quality, Finance, Sales, Production or Leadership. When I was starting early in my career I chose to move from Fast Food Restaurant Management to Sales. Specifically working for Combined, a Chubb Company. While this was not the exact company before. It was a company that was started by W. Clement Stone in 1922. While I was not the best door to door sales person, this position did teach me much that I still use today in my career. I had this job for a little over 2 years, but it has driven much of my thought process moving forward from here. There are three people specifically, that had helped me along the way. One was Domenic Pallante, another was Nance Gierke (hopefully I spelled that right), and the third was Ronald L Joan II. The first two respectively were the Regional and then District Manager. One of the things that Domenic taught me was the importance of training. He would look at what we sold for the day, and then determine that success was a direct reflection of one of two things. Motivation or education. He said, "Did you want to sell?", and of course the answer was yes. And then it was, "How long were you out? Did you put in the proper activities to get your results?" Again yes. Then it must be an issue of training, you don't know how to do things correctly. And then he held the entire sales teams in and trained for four hours. At first we would be upset, as anyone within sales knows about the law of large numbers, but he said with better sales skill, you will be able to spend less time in the field, and get better return on your time spent. And sure enough, even within that day, with only 4 hours in the field, I would sell more than I had done in the three days prior. This is an important lesson on knowledge and putting your efforts into the right place. It's like the example in "Seven Daily Habits of Highly Effective People" where the difference between a manager and a leader, where the manager is pushing the employees within a forest to work faster to cut down trees with their machetes, but the leader climbs the tallest tree, and says, "You're going in the wrong direction." To be effective you have to know the right things to do. I will continue on tomorrow about Nance and Ron and their impacts on my life. It’s been a while since Sarah and I indulged in churros. The memory of that chewy, crispy texture, perfectly complemented by a blend of white and Spanish caramel dip, still lingers. As we savored each bite, we couldn’t help but appreciate how these seemingly simple add-ons worked together to create a delightful experience. But beyond the churros, this culinary adventure got me thinking about what makes a successful sales department. Just like those churros, there are many moving parts, each requiring the right balance. A company isn’t just its sales team; it’s a symphony of interconnected departments, each playing a crucial role. Consider these touch points—the threads that weave the fabric of a customer journey. Marketing, operations, finance—they all contribute. An astute sales leader must reflect on the capabilities of each department and strategically uplift key stakeholders. It’s about orchestrating harmony, ensuring that every interaction aligns with the overall vision. So this is something to reflect upon the next time you have churros.

Sales people are a law unto themselves ! Do you have high performing sales people who don’t like writing up the work or updating the records? Do they irritate their colleagues in other departments but are loved by their customers? Here are some suggestions for getting the best out of them Set very clear targets and expectations, review them regularly but let them get on with it. Support them in any way you or the team can to minimise any admin work Plan occasional accompanied visits to see them in action Have a fair reward system in place for when they achieve targets Review the reasons why they have succeeded as well as when they fall short If you have more than one in the team get them to share best practices regularly . #sales #highperformers #vistage
