There are two ways North Indian Agency folks look at Mangalorean creatives or South Indian advertising professionals. 1. They are enthusiastic, smart, hardworking folks. Let me help them out with advice, potential leads, an opportunity to collaborate! 2. They are naive. They don’t know what real advertising is. We can get work out of them at super low prices Just smile, wave and move on. This might be an unpopular opinion. But have you encountered this? Would love to hear your thoughts. PS: I’ve met more of the Number 1 category.

My thoughts on the ABBYS… Are they genuine? I didn’t think so, when one agency swept up 80% of the awards in almost all categories. But I found myself changing that opinion when I went through the other entries and saw the winning work. I witnessed smaller agencies take home the Gold in certain categories for some spectacular work. Although they didn’t have a group of 50+ employees paid to attend, armed with whistles and loud voices. Nevertheless, it gave me a glimmer of hope that good ideas with great execution have a fighting chance. What absolutely impressed me was that there were categories that had atleast 10 entries but ZERO Winners. Not even a bronze. That, according to me said a lot about the jury decision and the awards’ intention. If your work didn’t make an impact, you don’t get a consolation prize. Congratulations to the winners. Credit where it’s due.

Trend vs. Fad. Long term strategic potential vs short term opportunity. Do you have any examples for both? Let me start. Fortnite, the game (Trend) and Pokémon Go (Fad). Tell me your examples in the comments.

My top learnings at Day 1 of #GoaFest2024 1) Adaptability is the name of the game. If Goafest shifted base because of the election season and subsequent limitations to create a large, highly effective experience in Mumbai using a Chameleon as their metaphor to drive home the point, you can figure out a way as well. 2) Writers, advertisers, agency folks- this is advice from an agency legend Mr. Ganapathy Viswanathan, an expert on PR, communication and branding with over 30+ years of experience including Ogilvy, Lintas eyc.- “Read Economic Times and Brand Equity to stay updated with the ongoings of the advertising and marketing world - If you don’t update yourself, you will be forced to, uncomfortably.” Glad to have met you sir! 3) NETWORK like your life depends on it. Because, it might! In one hour, I met a Media Planner and Brand Management expert Mr. Josraj Arakkal, who teaches the same at Symbiosis and has a 30+ years of experience working with Ad giants. Man!!! The conversation I had with Ganapathy and Josraj sir! 4) Every great creative you have made, an idea that you have had, consider it worthy. Send it in for an award. You never know which one can give you a recognition and credibility you deserve. 5) YOU. ARE. NOT. ALONE. There are creatives, CEOs, so many people who have gone through the exact same problems as you! Attrition, quality, credibility, results- don’t think you’re above or beneath anyone. TALK. LEARN. ADAPT. Bonus: Kingfisher has a new range of beer called ‘Queenfisher’. Tastes the same but looks better. Try it!
