🧠💜 June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month! 💜🧠 At Discover International, we are committed to raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other dementias that affect millions of people worldwide, as well as brain cancer, which poses a serious threat to brain health. This month, we join the global movement to support those impacted and to advocate for more research and resources to combat these devastating conditions. Did you know? 🔹 Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of cases. 🔹 More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's, and by 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. 🔹 Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging; it’s a progressive brain disease that leads to memory loss, cognitive decline, and eventually, loss of ability to carry out simple tasks. 🔹 Brain cancer is a malignant growth in the brain that can disrupt normal brain function and lead to severe neurological issues. 🔹 Glioblastoma is the most aggressive form of brain cancer, with approximately 14,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. Join us in spreading awareness and making a difference. Together, we can support those affected by Alzheimer’s and brain cancer, and work towards a future without these diseases. #EndAlz #BrainCancerAwareness #AlzheimersAwareness #BrainHealth #AlzheimersAndBrainAwarenessMonth #DiscoverInternationalCares

Have you ever wondered about the names of the countless diseases afflicting us? Some names are straightforward. Breast cancer and lung cancer directly allude to the affected parts of the body. Others, like ‘West Nile virus encephalitis’, are tied to geographical origins. What about conditions like ‘Alzheimer's disease’ and ‘Parkinson's disease? Despite their widespread impact, the origins of the names of these diseases are less transparent. Many of the names are eponymous, bearing the names of medical pioneers who dedicated themselves to comprehending and disseminating insights about these conditions. Next, consider ‘Lou Gehrig's disease’ and ‘Fregoli syndrome’. Lou Gehrig, a baseball icon, lends his name to a deadly ailment, and Fregoli, a master impersonator, is associated with a distinctive syndrome. Let us explore the origins of some of these names in the article posted on the Archiradhi Website (https://lnkd.in/g-mDKcqX). #alzheimer #parkinson #downsyndrome #crohns #als #medicine #information

June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month. At Vandria we are passionate about developing life changing therapies to treat age-related and chronic diseases, with a focus on neurological disorders. We are at the vanguard of mitochondrial therapeutics, developing first-in-class mitophagy inducers that rejuvenate cells. Our lead program, VNA-318 is a brain-penetrant, patent-protected, mitophagy inducer which has been shown to acutely improve memory and learning, and to have strong disease-modifying effects in models of neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. It is on track to enter clinical trials this summer. Worldwide, more than 55 million people are living with Alzheimer's or another dementia. Join the Alzheimer's Association in going purple and raising awareness this June. The more that people know about Alzheimer's, the more action we inspire. Let’s End Alzheimer’s - #ENDALZ. "There is evidence to support Patel’s observation that SARS-CoV-2 can set off inflammatory responses in tumors, causing cancer to progress much sooner and more aggressively, and even reawaken dormant cancer cells." Thanks for highlighting this new risk factor, Dr Kashyap Patel. I hope cancer charities do much more to help their members & supporters understand that: - #Covidisnotover - #CovidisAirborne & therefore - N95 respirators & HEPA filters should be *standard* infection prevention & control (IPC) measures in hospitals. This is much more important than hand hygiene for controlling spread of this illness. - Many public health officials & medics don't understand &/or don't want to address these "inconvenient truths". - The result is that the public & even healthcare workers are being misled/lied to (it's impossible to tell the exact combination). See, for example, the NHS advert telling staff it's ok to come back to work whilst still infectious (in comments). I presented my concerns on “Exploring the Interplay Between Long COVID, Inflammation, chronic diseases and Cancer”. More than a dozen or so attendees and colleagues shared their observations too on long covid including their own loved ones stories. Summary of my presentation included Long Covid is a multi-system disorder that can affect the heart, brain, lungs, joints and likely increases tumorigenesis (cancer). In EPILOC cohort, (age 18–65), the three most frequent clusters of symptoms were fatigue, neurocognitive, and chest/cardiorespiratory, with at least moderate impairment (>20%) of general health and working capacity in 26% of the subjects. A higher risk of diabetes has also been observed (8.3/1000); Life expectancy in the USA has dropped by 2.7 years in the middle of 2022. The study of the anatomical or functional imaging of brain alterations in Long Covid shows consistent changes in many brain areas, including the somatosensory cortex, rectal/orbital gyrus (including the olfactory system), temporal lobe (including the amygdala, piriform cortex, and the hippocampus), hypothalamus/thalamus, brainstem, and cerebellum. This reinforces neuropsychological data that showed Covid-19 as a risk factor to develop dementia, neurodegenerative diseases and mild cognitive impairments even in 50-year-old adults. In the general population, an incidence of Covid19-associated myocarditis of ~150 cases per 100,000 was observed. There is a need to answer many questions #long covid #inflammation #cancer

The youngest known patient diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease worldwide is a 19-year-old male from China. This case was reported in a recent study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. The patient started experiencing memory problems and difficulties concentrating on his high school studies at age 17. By age 18, he began suffering from short-term memory loss, such as forgetting if he had eaten or completed his homework. His cognitive decline was severe enough that he had to withdraw from high school.Extensive tests were conducted to rule out other potential causes of his memory impairment. Brain imaging revealed atrophy in the hippocampus, a region involved in memory, and cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed elevated levels of the p-tau181 protein, which is an early indicator of Alzheimer's disease. Genetic analysis did not find any known mutations associated with early-onset Alzheimer's, and there was no family history of dementia. This case remains a medical mystery, as the specific cause of the 19-year-old's Alzheimer's disease is unknown. More on AI in this specific area in a following article this week. #HealthcareAI newsletter #AlzheimersCommunity

Dysregulation of the innate immune system has been implicated in several neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and other CNS complications. Neuronal injury, cell death, gliosis, and demyelination can be driven by immune dysfunction from neuroinflammation. RJ Tesi briefly explains below, "how" you treat neuroinflammation is equally important as addressing neuroinflammation. #alzheimersdisease #parkinsonsdisease #multiplesclerosis #als #xpro1595 #clinicaltrials
