I am very interested in the Forest Carbon Scientist position at Pachama. Working on forest carbon projects here would be a dream come true. I have sent you a DM with more details. Looking forward to connecting!
May I ask all my fellow colleagues in academia, can you please like, comment, or better yet, share this post to get it noticed by LinkedIn?
For those of you who didn’t see it last month, many scientists are leaving Twitter / X. This is a great opportunity to use LinkedIn as a stronger and more relevant network. Now if only LinkedIn would open up the connection caps to allow researchers to connect more easily with peers. Either that or change the connection algorithm to adapt based on connection rates or be adjusted based on verified insititutional email addresses to avoid spam (this can be done via the “employee experience” in LinkedIn). Maybe that way LinkedIn wouldn’t be falling second to Mastodon in this survey.
If anyone at LinkedIn is listening, scientists and universities are ready to come to the table to discuss how we can make your network an even stronger one.
I'd like to respond to Karl Spencer's post and to the article written by Myriam Giselle Vidal Valero he refers to. First, thank you, Karl, for sharing your idea and pushing the debate. I completely understand people who decide to close their X accounts. Although I currently have serious moral dilemmas regarding utilizing X myself, I'm still undecided about my decision to leave this platform for good. Although I have indeed tended to neglect X in recent months, and have less of a reflex to use it. On the other hand, if academics, scientists, and journalists completely abandon the platform, the field will be fully open to trolls and fake news. That being said, as an academic, LinkedIn has become a more useful and complete platform that allows me to reach out to communities of practice, colleagues, alumni, and organizations associated with my field of expertise (public administration) in a very targeted way. As the director of a research center, LinkedIn offers the possibility of creating a page dedicated to information and promoting research and activities produced and organized by my organization. And the content shared is more focused on professional than personal information, which attracts me most to LinkedIn.

LinkedIn has unfortunately become a safe haven for some of the most notorious spreaders of misinformation about vaccination. I have reported them repeatedly to no avail. Meanwhile, folks on the correct side of the issue are the ones getting de-platformed. It seems to me, the LI team that evaluates the accuracy of content is not capable of discerning which information is correct and which is incorrect. The solution is easy. Simply do what we in medical education do. We use UPTODATE, the worlds #1 online clinical decision support tool used at every major medical school and teaching hospital. Contrary to what some claim, figuring out what's correct information and what is misinformation isn't hard. Just use UPTODATE. They filter out all the junk science. What's left is high quality evidence based literature. All good doctors use UPTODATE. LinkedIn allows the worst COVID vaccine misinformation super spreaders unfettered access to mislead the public. NPR reported that 300,000 - 400,000 American died unnecessarily due to vaccine refusal because of misinformation spread on cable news and social media. Misinformation is deadly and it must be squelched.

How do you stay up to date on what’s happening in the tech world?
This has been a question I’ve gotten a few different times as I’m progressing through this interview process.
Most people reference Twitter, tech blogs, various curated RSS feeds or Hacker News, which yes — I use those sources too.
But I also can’t but help get my nose in a good (old fashioned?) book! One person during this interview process mentioned that I was the first person to reference books.
There are downsides;
- no quick + easy update with new information 🔄
- can be out of date 📟
- anyone can publish (a blessing and a curse, really) 🤷🏼♀️
We could say some of the same things about other mediums as well.
Picking up a book gives the unique perspective for me to be able to:
- deep dive on a specific topic or frame in time 🤿
- look at something that has influenced an entire industry, through a different lens 👀
- provide context behind current decisions 🗂️
Here’s a picture of my bookshelf, and just some of the books I reference or have explored and found myself picking up to thumb through time and time again.
Are you an avid reader as well?
What books would you recommend?
