According to Everytown for Gun Safety, more than 200 people are shot and wounded with a gun every day throughout the country. In an average year, over 25,000 hate crimes in the U.S. involve a firearm - more than 69 every day. Sobering statistics and one of the many reasons Denver Health is among hospitals leading the path forward with a comprehensive public health approach we call our Firearm Safety Collaborative. Today on National Gun Violence Awareness Day and throughout this #WearOrange weekend, Denver Health is lighting up Pavilion A on the hospital’s main campus to call attention to and combat the gun violence crisis while honoring those affected by it. Learn more about the effect that firearm violence has on communities, why the “Wear Orange” initiative became a rallying cry and how to access a safe firearm storage toolkit if you own or have firearms in your house. #Issue #USA #Solution Gun violence in the USA remains a pressing issue, demanding a multifaceted approach. Comprehensive background checks, mental health screenings, and restricting access to high-capacity firearms can contribute to mitigating this problem. Additionally, community-based programs focusing on education and conflict resolution can address root causes. Engaging in open dialogues about responsible gun ownership is crucial. To combat gun violence effectively, legislative measures must align with public safety interests. Encouraging responsible firearm storage and promoting gun safety courses can empower individuals to handle weapons responsibly. Public awareness campaigns should underscore the importance of reporting potential threats and addressing mental health concerns. Stricter enforcement of existing gun laws and implementing technology to trace firearms can enhance accountability. Investing in community policing fosters trust and collaboration between law enforcement and residents. Furthermore, addressing socioeconomic disparities through targeted initiatives can help alleviate underlying tensions contributing to violence. #EndGunViolence, #SafetyFirst, and #GunControlNow. Advocating for sensible policies, fostering community engagement, and prioritizing mental health resources are pivotal steps toward curbing gun violence in the USA.

Fear is the one thing that connects us all. Fear is a risk factor that isn't acknowledged enough when we talk about a public health approach to gun violence prevention. When I heard the details about the shooting at the Kansas City Super Bowl celebration my first thought "What kind of moron takes a gun to a parade?" And then I asked myself, "How scared of being hurt or killed is a person who feels the need to carry a gun to a parade?" A few years ago a survey of Denver youth revealed the majority of young people who carry guns do so because they think everyone else has one. And let me be clear, this isn't them saying they're specifically afraid of a school shooting -- they are saying they are scared they will need one in the society which they live in. Many Second Amendment supporters also state the reason they exercise their right to beat arms is because they are scared of a tyrannical government. Research proves the majority of gun owners bought their weapon(s) for protection and a sense of security. Unfortunately, we know the presence of firearms dramatically increases the loss of life or serious injury. Whether that be in society at large or in one's own home. We need to explore more public health/ public safety/ community partnerships to improve people's sense of security and safety. Gun violence prevention begins with serving basic human needs as defined in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs pyramid. Am I wrong? #gunviolenceprevention #publicsafety #publichealth

In Georgia, every day two children are shot, and every two days a child dies from gun violence. Firearm injuries are the leading cause of death for children and youth in America. For the safety of our families and communities, gun safety reform must be met head on and I am proud of the work I've done in the Georgia House to tackle gun violence: ✅ Secured $80k per school for safety enhancements, saying NO to arming teachers. ✅ Advocated for tax breaks on gun safes & safety training. ✅ Co-launched coalitions & sponsored bills to protect victims & ban assault weapons. ✅ Delivered $7.4 million for Community-based violence intervention and prevention programs. But there is more work to be done. We must close background check loopholes, mandate training, raise the gun purchase age, & limit high-capacity firearms. Our work isn't finished until every DeKalb County resident feels secure at home. #EndGunViolence #BuildingABetterGeorgiaTogether #BeckyDelivers

Today, I am beyond proud to be part of the launch of Sandy Hook Promise's newest PSA on gun violence prevention. The PSA, titled "Just Joking", is centered around a chilling insight - 80% of school shooters tell someone before they commit an act, but all too often, people think they are "just joking". Celebrity comedians rallied together for this spot to perform a series of stand up routines - and it's later revealed that what the audience thought were punchlines were actually all real threats made by school shooters across the country. I remember watching the tragedy at Sandy Hook unfold. Growing up in a system where lockdown and active shooter drills were the norm. Feeling hopeless because it seemed like there was never any progress. But the issue of gun violence prevention is one I care so deeply about, and a fight that I will not give up on. We are starting to move the needle, and driving awareness on this cause is one I believe will truly create a groundswell for permanent change. Please join me in the fight to prevent gun violence - watch the PSA, learn the warning signs, advocate for policy change and show your support for SHP education programs in schools. Beyond proud of our team at Weber Shandwick (Team PROMISE), in driving awareness and change on this important issue. https://lnkd.in/eZxu48MF https://lnkd.in/eZp9B6hK https://lnkd.in/eYPscWQg

The possibility of gun violence breaking out in any public situation confronts those of us in Gen-Z every day. We've all gone through active-shooter drills and 25% of us have been in an actual active-shooter lockdown, according to PBS NewsHour. On average, almost every member of Gen-Z knows at least one person who has been either injured or killed by gun violence. A majority support stricter gun control, but more than 40% of young people have “somewhat easy access to a firearm.” Guns have killed more than 24,000 in the US so far this year. Many young people feel that gun culture is “connected to who they are as individuals,” reported PBS NewsHour. This separates American thinking from other countries. Youth engaged in gun culture “have higher scores on racial resentment and male supremacist ideas.” They also believe more racially diverse places are more dangerous. These beliefs are furthered by media echo-chambers. Fear-mongering is exacerbated so that many people who believe in gun control end up accepting our gun culture.
