A question called “Why?”   At the core of every decision we make and every action we take lies a simple question – “Why?” This one question guides us at Infosys, where, in a team of over 320,000, our collective endeavor is to amplify human potential and create the next opportunity for people, businesses and communities. In this environment, it’s essential to discover a personal “why” that aligns with our shared mission, ensuring our work is not only motivating but satisfying. As a leader, I recently had a wonderful opportunity to guide a colleague at a pivotal moment in his career by helping him rediscover his connection to our shared purpose. The story began when this senior teammate (an Infoscion for over 24 years) told me he was leaning towards an offer from another company – a common scenario in an industry where the competition for seasoned leadership is fierce. What unfolded over the next few hours was a great conversation, where we revisited his long journey at the company – the ups and downs, the camaraderie and support, the challenges faced and overcome together, the learning experiences and diverse roles, the growth fostered by both institutionalized programs and our work culture. At the heart of our discussion was a reminder of the purpose and values that always guided him here – the “why” behind his two decades plus at the company. The discussion was a seminal moment, as he realized he still deeply believed in and aligned with the purpose and values of the company. Recognizing this, I encouraged him to involve his family in his decision-making. Not surprisingly, his wife and kids wholeheartedly agreed that he continue working at Infosys due to the strong value system and work culture he enjoyed here. His decision to stay was further supported by a review of his career development program and elevation towards higher leadership roles.    This experience was a heartening and powerful reminder to me of our work – that it is ultimately about our people and their aspirations, relationships, and values. And it was a vivid reminder that at the root of our efforts - from individual achievements to our shared successes - therein lies the “why,” an essential question that motivates us all. Here’s a popular trivia question: Which was the first Indian company listed in the United States? No points for guessing, it’s Infosys Back in March 1999, at the turn of the century, it was a moment of pride for those at Infosys and everyone associated with it. Over the past twenty-five years, Infosys has consistently been a source of excellence. Whether it’s our clients, shareholders, industry observers, or even people who know someone working at Infosys, they all celebrate our successes. Not just because it’s a success for the company, but because it embodies the human spirit’s relentless pursuit of excellence. Wherever Infosys has taken me during these two decades, I’ve encountered that same warmth. Whether it’s a fellow passenger on a transatlantic flight or a cab driver in Bangalore, when they learn I work at Infosys, they nod and say, ‘Ah, Infosys!’. This deep-rooted admiration is a testament to the values upheld by Infosys’s founders. They consistently emphasized creating value for stakeholders—customers, employees, and shareholders. Our purpose, encapsulated in #TheInfyWay, is to create opportunities for people, businesses, and communities worldwide. Infosys was founded in 1981 and was the first Indian company listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange in 1999. In 2006, Infosys became the first India-headquartered company to remotely ring the NASDAQ opening bell. I vividly recall my pride as a Senior Client Partner, witnessing our founders remotely open the markets from our Mysore campus. In 2012, Infosys transferred its listing from Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). During this period, Infosys has grown from $120 million in annual revenues to approximately 19 billion, becoming one of the top-tier company in terms of market capitalization within the sector. Now, two decades into my journey with Infosys, I found myself at the iconic NYSE building in Manhattan. Standing there to ring the opening bell as our co-founders did, it all came rushing back— the memories, pride, and a sense of purpose. Above all, Infosys remains an intangible force that connects people across the globe. I think of all those encounters yet to come where someone will smile and say, ‘Ah, Infosys!’ We are grateful to all our clients, shareholders, wonderful colleagues, and leadership from around the world who have made this day possible! I had the privilege of engaging in a captivating fireside chat with Nandita Bakhshi (Board Member, BMO & Former CEO, Bank of the West) during the Infosys Finacle Americas Digital Banking Connect 2024 event in New York. The room buzzed with energy as over 100 banking leaders gathered, eager to explore the theme of “Recomposing Banking – Leading the Digital Continuum.” Our conversation delved into several thought-provoking topics: 1) Career Journey and Economic Climate: Nandita shared her inspiring career trajectory, from teller to CEO, offering insights into her variety of experiences across many banks. We discussed about the current economic climate creating challenges and opportunities for financial institutions, and the long-term strength of the US economy. 2) Key Trends Shaping the Future of Banking: As the digital landscape evolves, we explored the trends that will define the industry’s future. We delved into successful transformation strategies, the interplay between business, technology, and operations, and the exciting potential of emerging technologies like Generative AI. Nandita’s role at Bank of the West highlighted the significance of collaborative transformation, as successful change requires strong partnerships between business and technology and partners like Infosys. 3) Innovation and Risk Management: We engaged in a thoughtful dialogue about striking the right balance between embracing innovation and maintaining robust risk management practices, delivering the right outcomes for clients. 4) Leadership and Team Building: Nandita emphasized the qualities essential for future banking leaders, with a focus on empathy. Fostering cohesive leadership teams with diverse experiences emerged as a critical success factor for value creation. Our rapid-fire round injected some fun into the discussion, showcasing Nandita’s wit and charm.
