Thank you Denise Tilles for joining our WEX #ProductOperations team today in an Ask Me Anything session! The team read Denise and Melissa's book this year - and we got to ask some great questions about influence, junk drawers, career paths and of course, the great MC debate about the value of ProdOps ;) Also, fellow networkers, always ask the question. I met Denise at the Prod Ops Summit (Product-Led Alliance) this spring, asked her to connect and here we are. I am seeing more of this at larger companies. Petra Wille’s hypothesis is spot on - companies understand the value of product management. That’s a plus, for sure. BUT, where things often go wrong…the misguided assumptions of HR or the agile coaches themselves who want the sexier, newer role of product coach. That assumption? An agile coach is a “development” coach, so what’s the big deal in recasting them as a product coach? The lived PM experience and empathy are *critical* to the product coach role. I have yet to see a successful transition of agile to product coach. Have you? #productmanagement

Many companies are beginning to recognize the potential value that a product coach can bring to their organization. This is a good thing! However, the higher cost of hiring external product coaches often prompts companies to look inward for cost-saving alternatives. And quite frequently, the individuals tapped to fill this role are agile coaches. After all, they're already a part of the team and “coach” is right there in their title, isn't it? Here’s my take on why agile coaches can’t be product coaches:

🍭 A TREAT to chat with Sean Flaherty and Paul Gebel at Product Collective's #NYPC last month! 💡 TWO key takeaways around the value of product operations: 1️⃣ *Enables* PMs to make faster and better-quality decisions 2️⃣ Helps PMs focus on the things they were hired to do: deliver value, focus on customer needs, and drive revenue💰 💴 💲 #INDUSTRYConf #productmanagement #productops
How can Product Operations empower Product Managers? As Denise Tilles explains, it’s not about replacing product management practices – Product Ops supports Product Managers and helps them make timely and accurate decisions. It's like handing them a toolbox to supercharge their efficiency, without stealing the spotlight.
