That is an insightful history lesson.

As Memorial Day unfolds, it's more than just a day off or a time for barbecues. Retrain your brain. You can not operate as a private security officer, corrections, or police officer with a military mindset. It may be appropriate and needed for some situations, but in general, it does nothing but hurt you, your coworkers, and your relationships within your community. The shooting of Airman Fortson is an example of a deputy who was taught a military mindset and the consequences of that. The same department that produced the deputy who shot Airman Fortson, created the two officers who responded to a single acorn falling by firing their weapons multiple times. The second officer, a supervisor, knew nothing about what was going on beyond "he's shooting so I'm shooting, too". Do we need clearer examples of what happens when you approach situations with the wrong mindset? Copied from a prior post: The military does not give you the edge and preparation for careers in law enforcement, security, or corrections you think it does, because what you learn is sometimes at odds with the civilian world and needs to be relearned. The civilian world is focused on using the minimum force necessary to defend yourself or someone else. You are expected to render aid to the person who just attacked you in the event that they might need it. You generally work to prevent the threat from ever developing. You are a peacekeeper and a problem solver. The military world is focused on using greater force than the opposition to quickly and decisively end a potential threat before you need to defend yourself. You are not expected to render aid to the person who just attacked you even if they need it. You generally react to developing threats. You are an enforcer and a hammer.

There are three different variations of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Each medal symbolizes the values of Courage, Integrity, Commitment, Sacrifice, Citizenship, and Patriotism. Today, we highlight the special features that make up the Air Force National Medal of Honor. Coat of Arms: The lighting bolts at the top of the medal are borrowed from the Air Force Coat of Arms. Oak Clusters: Dark green oak clusters located in each of the star's five points represent strength. Laurel Wreath: The wreath of laurel leaves, a symbol of victory, was carried over from the Army's Medal of Honor design. 34 Stars: The 34 stars encircling the insignia are equal to the number of stars on the US flag in 1862. Each star represents a state, from both Union and Confederate states. Lady Liberty: The Statue of Liberty is centered in the Air Force Design. In addition to standing for Liberty, she is derived from the imagery of Queen Semiramis of Babylon who was famed for her beauty, strength and wisdom.

As I glance at the folded flag encased on my shelf, memories flood my heart. Each fold represents sacrifice, valor, and unwavering dedication to our nation. Let me share the symbolism behind this revered emblem: The First Fold: Holding the flag by its edge, I fold it lengthwise. This initial fold reminds me of the unity that binds us as Americans—diverse yet indivisible. The Second Fold: Another lengthwise fold follows, ensuring the blue field with its stars remains visible. It’s a reminder of the sky above, the vastness of freedom our heroes defended. Triangular Folds Begin: Now, I create a triangle by bringing the folded edge of the striped corner up to the open edge. This fold signifies honor, duty, and sacrifice. Forming the Second Triangle: Turning the top outer point inward, I shape another triangle. It represents resilience—the ability to endure and protect. Continuing the Triangular Folds: I repeat these folds until I reach the blue field—the heart of our flag. Thirteen folds in total, each carrying profound meaning. Tucking the Excess Material: The final fold tucks the excess material into a three-corner triangle—a “cocked hat.” It symbolizes liberty, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. This folded flag isn’t just fabric; it’s a testament to selflessness. We fold it with reverence during memorial ceremonies, honoring those who gave their all.
