HelloFresh is part of the initiative Together for Carbon Labelling which is advocating for the introduction of a carbon label to offer consumers full #transparency on the carbon footprint of their food choices. To push the carbon label for Germany and Europe HelloFresh and other organizations and scientists are collaborating with the German policy maker Rita Hagl-Kehl MP. As part of the initiative Together for Carbon Labelling HelloFresh co-organized the first of three events in the German parliament to discuss possible impact and methodology of such a consumer label. The first event explored the scientific perspective for a carbon label. Dr. Ulrike Eberle emphasized the importance of joining forces in Europe and pointed out that France and Denmark also already started to develop possible methodologies of the label. Rita Hagl-Kehl MP underlined the importance to not only support consumers, but also make a positive change for the future generations’ planet. We are proud to be part of this important milestone towards full carbon transparency for consumers and look forward to driving this topic further together with our partners. Today is #InternationalFreePlasticDay. The usual call for challenge today is to stop using single-use plastic for just one day 🤔 Well, forget about it. It's just impossible. Living a plastic-free day in today's world is like finding a unicorn in your backyard 🏡. Plastic is everywhere – from our morning coffee ☕ in a disposable cup to the clothes we wear 👚👗🎽. Even if you avoid single-use items and products with visible plastic packaging, your health will still be impacted by nanoplastics. 🔬 We prefer to be creative, think about real and honest solutions and use wit and influence to shake things up. Let's challenge the status quo and push for reusable alternatives that don't suffocate the planet in plastic 🌏. So here's to International Free Plastic Day – a gentle reminder that while we may not achieve a plastic-free life today, we're damn well going to try tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow. Well-designed Deposit Return Systems (DRS) deliver very high 📈 collection rates for PET bottles and Cans and therefore are a critical enabler for a ♻ circular economy for beverage packaging which in turn significantly reduces climate impacts. Those are some of the learnings from the recent DRS launches in Europe, the latest in Romania and soon to come Ireland and Hungary, bringing the total to 1️⃣ 6️⃣ EU Countries.   Enabling policy frameworks are 🗝 key to accelerate the transition to a low carbon, circular economy. That’s why we, alongside partners such as UNESDA - Soft Drinks Europe and Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE), call on those negotiating the EU’s #PPWR to maintain the obligation to set up DRS in each Member State and to only provide exemptions based on a 90% collection rate. PPWR & Green Deal: Did you know that from 2025, all deposit containers in reverse vending machines in Austria will (have to) be plated in the one-way deposit system? With my collection machines, it will also be possible to plate deposit containers at all small return points as soon as clear and forgery-proof recording is possible using a serialised 2D barcode on the deposit containers. It is also possible to use my collection machines in supermarkets as stand-by collection aids for invalid deposit containers in order to save space. The savings potential, especially when transporting the flattened deposit containers to the sorting systems, can be up to 70 %. 🏥 The healthcare sector is a champion for sustainability! Sustainability initiatives can take many forms and be implemented in many different areas, such as in #procurement and through the elimination of plastic and single-use items. Yesterday, I moderated conference sessions on Alternatives to Plastics (in the healthcare sector) and on Chemical Procurement Criteria. Plastics are harmful to our health and planet throughout their entire lifecycle, often containing toxic chemical additives. Just recently, microplastics were found in human testes, with a probable reprotoxic effect. 🔄 Our speakers Anna Fuster Muñoz, Teresa Arnau Plaza, and Cas van Egmond shared plastic reduction initiatives at their respective healthcare institutions. These initiatives ranged from the implementation of reusable equipment, waste prevention and improved waste management processes, access to clean tap water, and more. Their initiatives cut down on plastics, carbon emissions, and cost—most importantly the cost to human health—by committing to a #circulareconomy. A few examples: 💧 Installation of water sources at their facilities and using reusable bottles 🥼  Elimination of single-use and the incorporation of reusable medical gowns 🗑 Laundry and waste collected in reusable instead of single-use plastic bags or containers 🧵 Garments collected in cardboard strips instead of plastic bags ♻️ Textile waste recycled and repurposed locally 🔩 Reusable sterilisation containers to replace blue-wrap (LCA: https://lnkd.in/ei7HNpFU) ⚗️ Maiken Pollestad Sele and Valur Klemensson presented the European Phase-Out List for chemicals of concern (EPOL) that they use in their respective institutions. The #EPOL is a procurement tool with an accompanying multilingual scoresheet, used in their tenders to suppliers to screen for toxic chemicals and plastics (such as #PFAS, #bisphenols, #flameretardants, #phthalates, #PVC, and more) in order to make informed decisions and choose #toxicfree medical products. It is imperative to have chemical criteria for procurement in order to reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals in our healthcare institutions. 🙏🏼 A big thank you to our speakers and to everyone attending and engaging.
