The headline take-away seems pretty clear: fundraising is not as easy as it used to be. Predictions around what happens next are more of a challenge.
⬆ Is there pent up demand in the market after years of excess uncertainty? In this case, we might expect fundraising to accelerate and time in market to contract.
⬇ Or is slower fundraising a reflection of a larger shift away from private equity, as institutional investors allocate to other asset classes with expected returns that benefited from higher interest rates more directly, such as fixed income? If so, we may have to wait longer for a recovery.
⚖ Personally, I believe that there are many factors at work here and the picture is likely to remain murky for a little while yet. In the medium term, however, secular trends such as retail capital entering the space should lend support to fundraising. How exactly the "democratization" of private equity will play out is the hot question: will only established managers benefit? Will more investor protection disrupt fundraising and liquidity patterns?
