Strategy 4.5 of WHO the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030 recognizes the right of patients to be involved in decisions about their treatment and care, and emphasizes the importance of providing them with information and education to support them in making informed decisions. What is Shared Decision Making (SDM)? Shared Decision Making (SDM) is a collaborative process between a healthcare provider and a patient in which they work together to make a decision about the patient's care. The optimal decision takes into account evidence-based information about available options, the provider's knowledge and experience, and the patient's values and preferences. HOW CAN WE EMPOWER PATIENTS FOR SHARED DECISION-MAKING? World Patient Safety Day 2023 will be observed on September 17th under the theme "Engaging patients for patient safety", in recognition of the crucial role patients, families and caregivers play in the safety of health care. Through the slogan “Elevate the voice of patients!”, WHO calls on all stakeholders to take necessary action to ensure that patients are involved in policy formulation, are represented in governance structures, are engaged in co-designing safety strategies, and are active partners in their own care. This can only be achieved by providing platforms and opportunities for diverse patients, families, and communities to raise their voice, concerns, expectations and preferences to advance safety, patient centeredness, trustworthiness, and equity Objectives of World Patient Safety Day:- 1) Raise- global awareness of the need for active engagement of patients and their families and caregivers in all settings and at all levels of health care to improve patient safety. 2) Engage- policy-makers, health care leaders, health and care workers, patients’ organizations, civil society and other stakeholders in efforts to engage patients and families in the policies and practices for safe health care. 3) Empower- patients and families to be actively involved in their own health care and in the improvement of safety of health care. 4) Advocate- urgent action on patient and family engagement, aligned with the Global Patient Safety Action Plan, to be taken by all partners. The theme of World Patient Safety Day 2023, observed Sept. 17, is "Engaging Patients for Patient Safety," in recognition of the crucial role played by patients, families, and caregivers in receiving the safest possible healthcare. When it comes to effective patient-provider communication, significant challenges persist. For example, on average, patients are interrupted by their providers in the first 11 to 18 seconds of telling their diagnostic story. It is estimated that 79 percent of diagnostic errors are related to the patient-clinician encounter, and up to 56 percent are related to miscommunication. These communication challenges are compounded by today's fragmented healthcare environment, one in which clinicians and patients grapple with the pressures of needing to do more in less time, the confusion that technology can introduce, and the stress experienced by healthcare workers often feel. Not surprisingly, when patients are engaged as partners in their care rather than passive participants, it can lead to measurable improvements in safety, patient satisfaction, quality, and improved health outcomes.

In case you missed it last week, Dr. Jessica Hughes' research unveils the pivotal role of "Door-to-Floor" length of stay (LOS) in creating top-notch patient experiences. 🌟 🛏️ As every healthcare leader knows, fast bed turnover isn't just about efficiency—it's about delivering timely care at the right level. Hospitals rely on streamlined processes to ensure patient well-being and operational success. 🔍 Along with her researchers, Dr. Hughes delved into Lean principles to optimize ER workflows. The team’s findings uncovered key areas for improvement, from reducing practice variations to enhancing bed availability. 📈 🔄 "Waste Walks" and Rapid Process Improvement Workshops (RPIW) empowered frontline staff to spearhead change. Through Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, Dr. Hughes and her team helped the hospital fine-tune processes, trimming LOS and enhancing patient transitions. 🚀 🕒 The impact speaks volumes: a sustainable reduction in LOS, a surge in faster discharges, and streamlined bed assignments. Medical training is a fundamental aspect of patient safety and it’s vital that the research into improving medical training and to develop quantitative, statistical and qualitative feedback to improve efficiency, situation awareness, confidence and competency involves patients as partners in this process.

As someone deeply passionate about becoming an active member of the healthcare system and contributing to the safety of the patients, I understand the crucial role people with lived experiences play in promoting health, preventing diseases, and prolonging life. The World Health Organization recognizes the power of patient engagement and empowerment in improving safety and trust in healthcare. There is strong evidence to support the idea of treating patients and their carers as partners in their care. When patients actively participate in their healthcare decisions, they become more informed and invested in their treatment, resulting in better adherence to medical advice and improved treatment results. This collaborative approach fosters trust, communication, and better healthcare quality, ultimately creating a patient-centric healthcare system with reduced costs and improved overall well-being. In my recent role as a Communications Intern at the Health Innovation Network (HIN), I've been learning about the importance of patient involvement in enhancing health and social care. The HIN actively strives to involve patients and stakeholders, to ensure a more innovative and collaborative approach to patient involvement in healthcare improvement. It is inspiring to witness the impact of patient engagement and empowerment in improving safety and trust in healthcare.
