What I hear in this snippet is something that’s relevant to *anyone* from founder to entry-level: self-alignment is paramount and self-sacrifice doesn’t work in the long run. All too frequently I see the advice that the only way to run a successful business is to “power through” no matter what. You should always view black and white advice as suspicious; the reality and best advice is always nuanced. Life throws unexpected challenges at us constantly, and certainly running away at the first sign of difficultly is not going to result in you reaching your goals. But on the other hand, if you find yourself in a situation where there are constant, draining struggles, you need to start asking yourself what needs to change and being honest about all the possibilities. Maybe it’s your role description, changing manager, your own behavior or perspective, or finding a completely different job and role. “Powering through” and suppressing (or celebrating, which I find particularly disturbing) your own misery for as long as possible is not going to result in the best outcome for yourself or the people around you. Don’t do yourself this disservice. Lastly, I love that Rory gives voice to how precious our time is, something I’ve only ever heard from Elad Gil on the investor side. The older I get, the more I realize both how long life is and how short windows of opportunity can be. If you’re miserable in your job / role / company, I guarantee you that there is something out there that is an amazing fit for you. It can take a huge amount of courage to admit this, but it’s the best thing for you and for the people around you. Sacrificing yourself doesn’t do anyone any favors. As I venture into the startup world, I often question my capabilities. Why do I think I can change the world, fix the problem, do any of it? Am I qualified, do I have the experience, the resume, the blazer for it? But then I remind myself that these are not really my own doubts, but the one's others have put on me. So I go for a run and listen to a podcast that reminds me how we are all capable of conquering that mission...whatever it is. Simon Sinek once again reminds us that in fact the naive, unknown, hopeful person who is willing to disrupt and challenge the standards to solve the problem, is more likely to get it done, over the comfortable, well-paid c-level exec that just copies and repeats. They who are complacent to not find innovation, but use it as an adjective to convince us of change. The one that has everything to lose will seek creativity, team players, and innovate as a verb, to ensure the solution and build the dream. Our potential is not a decision made by others, but a choice we have to make on our own. So I am going to need a better blazer.
