What do BloomBoard, Inc. and Western Governors University have in common? We both believe that competency-based education is the most beneficial mode of instruction for students. Students learn faster and more deeply when they can apply their knowledge in situations throughout their learning journey, as opposed to only being assessed at a semester’s end. Plus, their progress is based on genuine mastery of the material, not just time spent sitting in a classroom. WGU pioneered the competency-based model and remains the guiding light for other universities to do the same. They’re now one of the largest universities in the United States. Their work is the proof point we need to encourage other institutes of higher education to start shifting their approach toward skills-based learning. Yesterday, I completed my last presentation as a graduate student. Through the practicum component of the Penn GSE Education Policy program, I, along with a small team, completed an original empirical analysis for a local school experiencing extreme levels of chronic absenteeism. The process was less than seamless, but the satisfaction our client expressed was the ultimate goal! Thankful for the experience and excited for what is next. Alumni are lifelong shareholders in the university. Yes, shareholders. They invest in their university experience from the moment they start their course. This investment should last a lifetime. It is indelible on an alum's CV or resume - forever. A positive student experience - and connections with alumni throughout this journey - contributes to building shareholder dividends. The fact that at Constructor University alumni are actual shareholders is even more powerful, but we are ALL shareholders. As I argue in The Alumni Way, students (and alumni!) are NOT customers or clients. They are not purchasing shampoo. University is a transformational experience. The more we personally invest in the connection the more we get out of it for life! Well done to Constructor Alumni for underpinning this work for their students and alumni on a successful Alumni Day last week!

We must highlight the value of community colleges to our youth. These institutions offer a supremely cost-effective pathway to a career or advanced degree thanks to partnerships with both industry and four-year universities. Community colleges tend to focus on teaching practical, hands-on skills that align best with employer needs. This offers a quicker and more affordable route to a well-paid skilled position should students elect to go straight into the workforce upon graduation. These students often pick up highly practical and valuable certifications along the way as well. Graduates from community college programs can also save significantly (50% or more) on future education costs through scholarships, such as Drexel Promise, for further studies in fields ranging from general studies to engineering. This enables people to earn reputable four-year and advanced degrees in fields like engineering, healthcare, or computer science for a fraction of the cost of those who opted to enter straight into a four-year program. This should be the future model of higher education for the vast majority of our youth. As parents, we should talk it up as much as we can because it could save our children tens of thousands of dollars in costs and potentially years of toil in fields and programs they may not even end up enjoying ultimately.
