AI IS A WHOLE NEW INDUSTRY Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s chief executive officer and co-founder, said generative AI is kicking off a wave of investment worth trillions of dollars, which he believed would double the amount of data centers in the world in the next five years and deliver market opportunities for NVIDIA. “A whole new industry is being formed, and that’s driving our growth.” Nvidia on reported quarterly sales of $22.1 billion and forecast another $24 billion for its current quarter; triple the previous forecasts. The key takeaway regarding AI is that it is going to have a massive impact on businesses across different industries. According to AI experts I work with, extensive developments will be made in AI by 2030. Stated another way, AI will have a transformative effect on the way businesses operate. What I find equally interesting and concerning is that the majority of CEOs continue to design long term strategies without taking into account the impact of AI. For example, I recently spoke with executives from a large international ocean carrier that has launched logistics operations in the USA. The executives contracted me to evaluate their strategy. On paper, the strategy was sound. In reality, I found it lacking for the following reason - the strategy failed to make any considerations for the impact of AI on the companies they want to pursue, nor did the strategy contain any mention of how AI will be leveraged by the newly formed logistics company. The argument I made was this - you have to build the company of the future today. AI will increase velocity across every aspect of business. (I’m amazed at how few executives understand the topic of velocity.) Consumers will make buying decisions faster. Deliveries and logistics will be faster. New products will be launched faster. Corporations will have to leverage data to make business decisions faster. New industries will be created faster. Business models and technology used in 2024 will not be successful in 2030 and beyond. New entrants and established corporations must stop viewing AI as being a way to automate functions and reduce costs. Legacy tech stacks and software will become the Achilles Heel of businesses that didn’t invest the time, money and effort to understand and invest in AI. We’ve seen this movie before. When ships converted from coal to oil in the 1870s, velocity across businesses accelerated as the speed of shipping increased. When Henry Ford introduced the Model T in 1908, and also introduced the assembly line, manufacturing accelerated resulting in new products and the creation of new industries. When Microsoft released the first version of Windows, it transformed businesses across industries. AI’s superpower is that it will transform businesses by accelerating velocity. Companies must start planning for this today. #retail #leadership #ceo #velocity #strategy #supplychain

A quick take on AI outside of my comfort zone of software engineering and a problem with senior leadership technology savviness and long-term strategies today. I often refer to Brittain Ladd, a world-class supply chain management advisor and expert, when talking about global trends in SCM, Retail, Manufacturing, and other non-SW engineering topics including EVs... I think he gets many things right. I suggest following him (posts and articles) for many knowledge nuggets and global market predictions. SW is “eating the world”, but it is the manufacturing and supply chain that really makes its foundation (food, machinery, clothing, as well as CPUs, Telecom equipment, and data centers) after all, “Cloud is just someone else’s computer” is a superficial joke, but there is always a physical something, that had to be manufactured from physical resources, built, shipped and deployed, to run your workload. #supplychain #aiadoption #aiapplications #seniorleadership
