Today I had the honour of presenting as part of a panel entitled “Preserving Paradise: Nurturing Nature for a sustainable future” at Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) 's Conference on Sustainable Tourism. The focus of my presentation was on actionable steps hospitality businesses could take to operationalize sustainability into their operations. Here are some key takeaways from my presentation: 1. Leadership Buy-In: Securing buy-in from leadership is pivotal. Leaders must align on the scope and definition of ESG for the company, recognizing its intrinsic value and significance. 2. Identifying ESG Issues: Pinpoint where ESG issues manifest within the organization. Understand existing policies and regulations addressing these issues, and identify areas for necessary adaptation and improvement. 3. Developing an ESG Strategy: Integrate ESG seamlessly into strategic planning processes. It should be an inherent aspect of how the organization conducts business, not a separate consideration. 4. Establishing an ESG Management System: Implement a robust system to assess risks, analyze performance, and drive continual improvements in ESG-related matters. 5. Communication: Foster transparent communication channels to share information on ESG performance, progress, vision, and values with both internal and external stakeholders. 6. Consulting ESG Professionals: Collaborate with ESG professionals to leverage our expertise in designing and implementing tailored ESG strategies aligned with your organization’s unique circumstances. It’s time for less buzzwords and more measurable progress towards sustainability goals. Prepare for the next crisis, let’s do it green! And by the way, green is a movement, not a project. Read about my work for the Veiligheidsregio Amsterdam Amstelland in this interview on transformations and sustainability and our new approach to drive sustainable change. It all started when I met Marjolein Baghuis at a Nyenrode Alumni VCV event and we started talking about the different ways to approach sustainability in organisations. At the time I just finished Anke van Hal, Maurice Coen & Jan Rotmans course on transitions and poly crisis, and I was looking for a strategy to drive our Green Office initiative. How do you implement lessons on wicked problems into your own organisation? How to start (restart) green movement? I did another research paper on the subject and it rethought the way we approached our Green Office. It shouldn’t be managed by incentives or rules, but by intrinsic motivation. Going Green is to speak to hearts, not minds. Also thanks Andre Nijhof, Nicolas Chevrollier, Edgar Karssing for sharing your insights, Steven van de Looij for giving this initiative space to grow, Bram Tromp your shared vision on sustainability in the organisation and Yola Sinke & Rosemarijn Welschen-Loggers (and many other) for making the Green Office work. Doing great things and succes always has many parents. #GreenOffice #sustainability #transformation
Meet Ian Helgering, leading change across Amsterdam's fire stations and beyond. About his balancing act with small versus large steps, individual initiatives versus shared goals. All to create a movement to drive sustainability across the organization. Read on to find out more about electric fire trucks, vegetarian snacks, and personal leadership. Thank you Andre Nijhof for setting up this connection - which led to this inspiring interview.

Insightful article on a truly sustainable leader. Considering growing public interest in greenwashing by corporations, top executives need to turn corporate messaging into concrete action. "Before putting together a corporate statement, think about how you can bridge the gap and turn poetic words into meaningful action. That is the definition of truly sustainable leadership."
