In a recent move, France Central bank’s prudential regulatory arm, ACPR, is advancing work on the mandatory certification process for smart contracts. The initiative is set to enhance security, regulatory compliance, and consumer protection to transactions on Blockchain technology. Here are the key points from the development, 💎 All smart contracts will require mandatory certification, moving beyond traditional auditing methods to ensure higher security and regulatory compliance. 💎 The move aims to nurture innovation while managing risks, ensuring that only secure and compliant smart contracts are used. 💎 The initiative faces challenges such as the complexity of smart contracts, the need for re-certification upon updates, and some negative impact on innovation due to strict certification requirements. 💎 The mandatory certification may stifle innovation within the EU by blocking the use of uncertified smart contracts. 💎 ACPR is considering implementing a warning system for uncertified smart contracts, similar to website security alerts, allowing users to make informed decisions about their use. 💎 Importantly, France’s approach may influence other jurisdictions, potentially leading to a broader adoption of similar certification requirements globally. With this move, we are heading towards an era of more responsible smart contracts that addresses consumer protection and security concerns. Following up on my previous journal post, I touched upon our work on Mauve, a platform for personal data aggregation and insight generation. During our refinement and research process, we realised the significance of digital identity in relation to personal data. It became evident that managing and accessing this identity securely and privately was paramount. Our research led us to the concept of decentralisation as the solution. This insight prompted us to pivot from Mauve to the creation of TungstenID, a platform for decentralised digital identity management and verification. TungstenID operates on a straightforward principle. It utilises a layer1 blockchain and builds on an existing layer2 network. This makes TungstenID a robust and scalable layer3 solution that's also Web3 compliant. I foresee TungstenID as the future replacement for traditional login systems, which rely on usernames and passwords and are susceptible to breaches. This past weekend, I had the honour of sharing my insights on the burgeoning field of cryptocurrency as a guest speaker on channel 189 Popcentral, DStv hosted by Oluwasegun Kosemani. The conversation gravitated towards the challenges and security concerns inherent in digital currencies, and the evolving landscape of regulatory measures to prevent illicit activities. Such guidelines are not just about creating a safer digital environment but also about ensuring platforms adhere to stringent Anti-Money Laundering (AML) protocols, including transaction monitoring. For individuals navigating the crypto space, the adage "if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't" rings especially true. Scams abound, and due diligence is your first line of defence. Here are additional security tips for individual crypto users: 1. Educate Yourself: I think it's important to understand the underlying blockchain technology. The more you know, the better equipped you are to make informed decisions. 2. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Beyond standard security practices, consider physical security keys like YubiKey for an added layer of protection. 3. Be Wary of Exchanges: The ease of setting up exchanges, thanks to white-label solutions, means scams are rampant. Stick to well-known and reputable platforms. 4. Diversify Storage: Utilize cold (offline) and hot (online) storage for your digital assets, balancing accessibility and security based on your needs. At @KAP Tambunan & Nasafi, we are dedicated to transforming the audit landscape by leveraging cutting-edge technology. Both we and our partner, CODDE, are developing automation for smart contract audits, and here is one of the audit report summaries. The Smart Contract, named 'BridgeContract', is designed to streamline the transfer process of ERC20 tokens cryptographic assets. However, upon auditing, several areas need immediate attention. ⚠️ Firstly, the `transferFrom` function in the smart contract is prone to reentrancy attacks due to state update after the transfer operation. This needs immediate remedy with the state update should be done before making the external call. ➡️ Secondly, there is room for gas efficiency in the `transfer` function. An operation like `++numberOfTransfer` can be used for incrementing instead of `numberOfTransfer = numberOfTransfer + 1`. ⚠️ Lastly, the error messaging in `transferTokens` function needs enhancement. The use of OpenZeppelin's `SafeERC20` library is suggested for this purpose. For a comprehensive audit, the use of the Mythril tool, the Slither tool, and a thorough human audit are highly recommended. The BridgeContract generally meets ERC20 standards. However, it is necessary to address these vulnerabilities and areas of inefficiencies to maintain the security and efficient operation of the contract. Alongside Crystal Intelligence EU Blockchain Observatory and Forum European Crypto Initiative VASP Holdings and Zornitsa Daskalova, we've advocated for clear, consistent and proportionate regulatory guidance. Leveraging the group's experience, we focused on issues relating to CASP's complying with the Travel Rule. ✔ We suggested the burden of guaranteeing Travel Rule interoperability should NOT be on the CASPs, but on the Travel Rule service providers to work on open and globally connected networks ✔ We challenged the need for more than one technical proof of ownership over a self-hosted wallet address in transfers above EUR 1000 ✔ We highlighted that the use of self-hosted addresses does NOT inherently offer more risk And asked for clarity in several other topics, like privacy-enhancing technologies and user verification.
