The #BTI2024 is out!   #Democracy is on the decline - Out of 137 surveyed nations, only 63 are democracies; but there is hope! #Brazil & #Poland stand as examples where voters have reversed the democratic erosion.    BTI finds lowest political participation in 1/3 of 137 countries surveyed. 🗓 Happening NOW: SAIFAC Conference 2024 on DEMOCRACY, EXCLUSION AND PARTICIPATION. The South African #Constitution provides for the right to #vote in section 19; and this right is couched in language which limits it to South African citizens. On the other hand, other civil and #political rights found in the Constitution of South Africa – such as the rights of #freedom of expression and association – are not limited to citizens. In a selection of other countries, too – including #African countries, such as #Malawi and #Namibia – non-citizens have a conditional right to vote. 💡 Against the backdrop of South Africa's seventh democratic elections, and on its 30th anniversary of democracy, a few questions relating to the right to vote arise and the conference aims to unpack these questions and more. #KAS4Democracy #democracy #politicalparticipation #elections2024

In 2024, over 70 countries will hold elections amid a “democratic recession,” a nearly two-decade decline in political freedoms globally. Democracy, beyond voting, relies on human rights, rule of law, and checks and balances. Freedom House reported a 17th consecutive year of global freedom shrinkage, with 35 countries regressing and 34 advancing in 2022. Elections in Taiwan and South Africa may affirm democracy, while Russia’s likely performative election and India’s upcoming polls raise concerns. Populism threatens democratic guardrails globally, exemplified by potential challenges in the US and the rise of hard-right parties in the EU. Ahead of the #EU elections next June, a new report of ILGA-Europe shows a stark rise in anti-#LGBTI, and in particular transphobic statements from politicians across #Europe.     Executive Director of ILGA-Europe, Chaber says: “LGBTI rights are under attack, and children are being harmed in the process. As we witness the rise of political forces that question basic fundamental rights and freedom, the elections next June will be a pivotal moment for the EU, and for LGBTI people.
