Approximately 23% of the world's ocean floor had been mapped to a resolution of at least 100 meters. This information comes from the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, an initiative aimed at mapping the entire ocean floor by 2030. The resolution of sea floor mapping can vary widely, with some areas, particularly those of interest for navigation, scientific research, or resource exploration, mapped at much higher resolutions, sometimes down to 1 meter or less. However, the vast majority of the deep ocean remains mapped at much coarser resolutions, if at all, due to the immense challenges and costs associated with deep-sea mapping. These efforts are part of a broader scientific and exploration initiative that recognizes the importance of understanding our ocean's floor for reasons ranging from navigation safety, climate change modeling, biodiversity conservation, and the sustainable management of marine resources. The Seabed 2030 Project is a collaborative effort that pools data from various sources, including academic institutions, government agencies, and private sector entities, to improve our understanding of the ocean floor's topography. Progress is ongoing, and the coverage and resolution are expected to improve as technology advances and more resources are dedicated to this endeavor.
🇵🇹 Greetings from Lisbon! Seabed 2030 Project Director Jamie McMichael-Phillips is in the capital for the Economist World Ocean Initiative. 🌊 We look forward to attending workshops, catching up with partners, and exploring the latest innovations in cross-sector science and technology. Are you attending too? Drop us a line to arrange a meeting. 👇 #WorldOceanSummit #OceanDecade #Seabed2030 #Hydrospatial

Cultural Policy, Mega-Events & City Regeneration•Research Director•Public Speaker•Advisor•European Capitals of Culture•Olympic Games•Art Festivals
This year's #ECoCFamily meeting is hosted jointly by the three #ECoC2024 cities, in Tartu. The ECoC Family Forum is dedicated to the Future of the European Capital of Culture programme & proposes three key topics - "Dark Bidbooks, Bright Programmes", on the increasing presence of difficult topics, dark heritage, conflict, challenges and local difficulties as justification for the need to host an ECoC - ECoC as a motor for change. - "The Capital is Dead… Long Live the Region!" , touching on the growing importance and visibility of regions as key to the success - and legacy - of ECoC programmes. - "Huge Shows. Modest Budgets", where I will be the keynote, debating the remarkable contrast between the iconic interventions, grand narratives and major expectations generated by ECoCs and the tight - often shrinking - resources available to make this happen.

Renewable Energy Program Manager at Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe- Together for 100% Renewable Europe
Some thoughts from my panel intervention "Happy coexistence with nature, citizens, and fisheries?"at the Annual Event #WindEurope2024 in Bilbao. As someone deeply involved in pushing for a fast, fair, and nature-friendly #renewableenergy acceleration through my work with Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe, the discussion was close to my heart. It’s clear that if we want to see the massive volumes of wind energy 🌬 getting off the ground, we need to bring 💚 local communities into the heart of the conversation. Key takeaways: 🤝 Engaging with Communities: It's about real conversations and genuine dialogue, understanding local needs and concerns, and acting on them. Developers must move beyond viewing communities as obstacles or mere stakeholders to be informed, towards seeing them as active partners in planning, developing, and sharing the benefits of wind energy projects. 💬 Being Fair, Open, and Inclusive: It is about early, transparent, and honest communication. Communities must have a say in projects that affect their lives and must be provided with opportunities to participate meaningfully in decision-making processes, including the location, planning, and development of these projects. 💪 The Power of Community Ownership: When communities can own and co-invest, they see the tangible benefits of wind projects and cherish the projects with pride. These projects do more than just generate power, they EMPOWER communities by ensuring economic benefits are retained locally and foster broad support for the energy transition. Reflecting on the discussions we had, I'm reminded that at the core of our climate action efforts, it is the peoples participation and their empowerment what truly drive meaningful change. As we continue transforming our societies and economies towards a climate neutral Europe, fully powered by #renewableenergy, let's ensure that every step we take also builds stronger, more resilient communities along the way. #TogetherFor100RE Mattia Cecchinato Ariel Brunner Guy Willems WindEurope https://lnkd.in/eRqQAH-y
