"What words do you use to describe your career within the travel industry? Do you prefer to go by the term travel journalist — one I’ve always opted for as a smokescreen to hide the fact that I have zero journalistic training — or plump for the more generalist ‘travel writer’? The most cynical amongst us might argue that we are, in fact, travel marketers. Whether you don’t take press trips and travel entirely unsupported or work closely with PRs, the aim of the vast majority of all travel writing is to promote a particular destination, activity or event. There’s very little space within the travel media for negative travel stories; our job is to capture the essence of a place and make the idea of it so captivating that our readers cannot help but follow in our footsteps..." Read why travel journalists should be using their skills as markets to promote themselves, not just the journalists they write about in my latest piece for Talking Travel Writing https://lnkd.in/ePV95ACj

Premium SEO Content Writer ✍️ Helping brands *actually* build their audience with blog posts that convert 👻 Ghostwriter 📊 ROI-Focused Storyteller in love with Content Marketing
"Greece Talks" 🗣️🗣️ [A conference by Travel.gr, one of the biggest travel portals in Greece, in collaboration with Proto Thema, one of the most influential Greek Sunday Newspapers.] I had the pleasure of attending it on Thursday. Lots of public and private sector representatives took part in the dialogue. They suggested practical solutions to boost our city's and Greece's image. In 2023, Greece: ↳ generated more than 2.1 billion euros in tourism (!) ↳ marked an increase of 200% in cruises ↳ accommodated more than 1.4 million US tourists (our primary visitors) And yet Greece: ↳ still doesn't offer direct flights from the US in other cities than Athens ↳ still lacks the infrastructure to welcome guests ↳ still doesn't market properly despite having geopolitical advantages and all the assets to succeed Some of the solutions proposed: 👉 Beautify the public space 👉 Rebuild the road system to welcome neighbors 👉 Build more marines to "cement" destinations as touristic ones 👉 Invest in airports and direct flights from/to the US 👉 "Amenitize" destinations with things like golf clubs, resorts, and retreats 👉 Bring in more theatrical performances and film festivals 👉 Encourage local marketing initiatives from the municipalities and the private sector I particularly loved Beetroot's presentation and its efforts to export Greek culture and products worldwide. Urban Soul Project also suggested some pretty cool projects to boost our city's image, such as "Dimitria", "Kapani Project", and "OPEN House". Overall, this was a value-packed conference with many inspiring professionals who are actually out there making small changes daily. As #freelancewriters, we, too, contribute to marketing Greece to the world. Interacting with like-minded peers is key to viewing the big picture. A big thank you to all the participants! 👏👏 _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Hey, I'm Anna - a freelance content writer specializing in travel, hospitality, and food niches. Want to work together? Day 42/75 Travel Myth! One of the biggest myths in travel is that you need to have a load of money and travel to far-off places to create outstanding travel content. This is subjective. Of course, those who can travel to different beautiful states and countries must not stop themselves but one can also easily start from home. The city that you live in must have at least 10-15 spots that are a must-visit. You just need to be a passionate explorer to visit and capture them. Just make the magic happen!! 🏆 I have participated in the LSKDM™ 75 Days Content Creation Challenge. Please like and comment if you find my content informative/entertaining/ useful. #lskdm #contentcreation

Travel editors: if your outlet prohibits press trips or comps *and* you also don’t pay expenses, this sends the message that promoting diverse voices isn’t a priority for you. Because you’re limiting your pool of contributors to a very narrow subset of writers who can afford to travel on their own dime (or happen to live somewhere really interesting and tourist-friendly). Meaning, you’re probably excluding a lot of talented people from marginalized groups.

Revealing the source of inspiration and research to enrich content. Here it goes: Travelling to places! Travelling to different places is like exploring a big book of knowledge with each city and town contributing a new chapter. It's not just about seeing beautiful places; it's about learning from the people and experiences. Whether it's the busy streets of cities or the peaceful mountains, each spot adds something special to my creative toolbox. I take inspiration from talking to locals, trying different foods, and even getting a little lost now and then. These adventures become the building blocks for the stories I create. Through my travels, I've learned that wisdom isn't only in books; it's in the everyday moments and diverse cultures I encounter. The things I discover on the road are the ingredients that make my content authentic and relatable. Travel isn't just a change of scenery; it's a new way of looking at things that shape my storytelling, making it a journey of constant learning and connection. #travel #contentcreation #inspiration #writingjourney #research

Congratulations to our March 2024 👏 featured member of the month, Judi Cohen! Check out what she had to say in her #FEATUREDMEMBER Q&A. 1. What got you into travel writing? Following my retirement after 35 years in engineering and construction, I trained to be a luxury travel concierge and began to post about traveling on Instagram. Editors reached out to ask if I would be interested in writing about my small ship and offbeat destinations. I write for various publications and also own a website, TravelingJudi. 2. What’s the most challenging part of being a travel journalist for you? It is sometimes difficult to take photos and keep detailed notes while being in the moment during my travels. I also find it challenging to find a balance between travel, writing, and my responsibilities at home. 3. What is one thing [equipment or personal item] you can’t go without on the road? My iPhone. I do most of my photography and videography on my iPhone. 4. What’s your most unusual and/or memorable travel experience? I’ve had so many memorable experiences, but the one that stands out most was my first time on an expedition in Antarctica aboard the Akademik Sergei Vavilov, a Russian scientific ship. That experience became the first of more than 50 small ship expeditions all around the world. 5. How did you learn about NATJA and why did you join? I saw that some of the writers I follow on Instagram were members and became interested. 6. What is the best piece of advice you could give to a rookie travel journalist? Don’t try to cover everything. Find your passion and share stories and experiences about the kind of travel you love. #NATJAFeaturedMember #journalist #travelphotography #travelwriting #writing #travelblogg #Cruising #LuxuryTravel
