M&A market in transition: new opportunities for the logistics industry   Cumulative risks and uncertainties, plus tighter financing conditions – M&A activity in the transport and logistics sector declined by more than a quarter worldwide in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous half-year.   But especially now, M&A projects are important to optimise the portfolio. The transformation needs of companies are enormous. A transaction can become an enabler to reposition the business, promote its own growth and achieve sustainable results in the long term.   What can make an investment particularly lucrative: medium to small businesses are currently valued rather cautiously.   Under all these new auspices, the wind is currently turning in the transport and logistics sector. Until now, it was mainly about big acquisitions, freight volumes and networks, scaling and size. Now, the focus is shifting from mass to class. Players are concentrating on more selective and smaller transactions, new competencies and innovations.   Joint ventures and alliances are also becoming more popular again – as a good option to approach new topics step by step. For example, AI-supported solutions to improve delivery performance and customer service, or fit-for-future concepts such as circular economy.   There is no question about it: the logistics industry is facing change. Regional trade flows, increased warehousing and digitalisation are becoming (even) more important. The next wave of M&A could therefore be directed at land transport and warehouses.
