To serve all constituents equitably as more services go online, governments must prioritize digital accessibility. One way to achieve this, according to a brief published by the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO), is by establishing a formal accessibility-focused role. This role would be devoted to improving access to state programs and services, assessing usability and implementing improvements for digital products and services, auditing state websites and other digital platforms for accessibility, offering accessibility training to state employees, and advocating for the use of accessibility best practices across state agencies. We love to see this kind of progress happening across state governments, as it directly impacts the resident experience and ultimately makes the transition to digital more effective. Nice! Check out all these digital accessibility guides, examples, and resources from Digital Services Coalition member companies!
In December 2023, the GSA and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released M-24-08, “Strengthening Digital Accessibility and the Management of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.” The memo encouraged efforts to build a positive culture around digital accessibility, and provided clear and immediate government-wide actions. We are pleased to see the government’s response, including a recommendation to “explore options to proactively enforce Section 508 compliance.” Learn more about our key takeaways and the work DSC member organizations are doing to improve accessibility. >> https://lnkd.in/e-VcH6KU #accessibility #digitalservices #section508 Ad Hoc LLC Bixal Bloom Works Public Benefit LLC CivicActions Coforma Exygy Fearless Truss

"Overall, federal tech accessibility is 'well below expectations, given the federal government has had over 20 years to implement programs capable of achieving and maintaining modern [information and communications technology] standards'”. A Government Executive article on a Governmentwide IT Accessibility Assessment by Natalie Alms shares troubling insight on the current state of #webaccessibility across U.S. government entities. The GSA report revealed that less than 30% of the "most viewed" pages were up to accessibility standards. More troubling, however, is that no updated guidance was provided for over 10 years, and the DOJ took a10 10-year break from releasing its "legally-required biennial report on Section 508 compliance." Significant change is necessary for governments across the country. No person should struggle to access important information contained on these sites. Be a voice to your local government and let them know when the services they provide are not accessible.
