Radical giving – where you give generously without expectations or hidden agenda – is entirely possible. And no matter how small your contribution is, it can tremendously impact your community. Just ask AJ McCreary. AJ McCreary is the co-founder and executive director of Equitable Giving Circle, a non-profit whose mission is to transform and empower Portland’s BIPOC communities through radical giving. Led by Black women and femmes, EGC has undertaken projects addressing these communities’ most urgent needs, such as food security, safe housing, and wellness. Among EGC’s most notable projects is its weekly free food pantry. The pantry supplies fresh produce, nutrient-dense food items, and other necessities to over 100 BIPOC families. EGC also has a CSA program where it delivers farm share boxes to more than 300 families across Portland. AJ McCreary is a passionate and fierce community activist. Aside from running EGC, she uses her extensive knowledge, and her lived experience as part of an interracial family to serve the community at large and help them understand that Black lives do matter. As we continue to spread the word about the Virginia Community Engagement Index (VCEI), we want to thank the diverse group of individuals and organizations who made this work possible, including AmeriCorps and Points of Light! During the process of building the VCEI, we recruited a Core Team of partners representing 38 diverse public, private, and nonprofit organizations across Virginia to help us identify what the VCEI needed to be. The central questions we set out to uncover were, “Who are Virginia’s community volunteers and civically engaged residents? What do they care about? Where and how are they engaging? And why?” Together, we developed a study that could help us better understand the degree to which service, volunteerism, and civic engagement is a strength in our communities, and how to continue to build and leverage that strength. For the last few years, I have had the honor of volunteering with Dallas CASA, an organization that recruits, trains, and supervises community volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in protective care. Volunteering with this organization has not only been eye-opening, but heart-breaking at times. As an advocate for these children, our work involves meeting with kids on a monthly basis, advocating for their interests in court, and addressing any issues they face in school, health, or other areas of their lives. One of the most jarring realizations is that in many cases, there isn’t anyone else beyond us looking out for the kids. There is no backup. The system is overloaded and isn’t designed to deal with the complex problems that arise for these kids. The job of the advocate is to be that person that takes action and does all they can to intervene in the child’s life. This work is a reminder that as each of us observes the problems we have in this world, we can’t simply rely on the system or expect others to step up. It's easy to assume there are already measures in place or that someone else will take care of it. In reality- if we want to see change or make an impact, we have to do it ourselves. When we see issues in our community, we owe it to each other to bear the responsibility of change. We need to recognize that each of us has the power to make a difference.  By getting involved, we can help bridge the gaps and provide innovative solutions or much-needed support where it’s needed most. Every interaction can teach you valuable lessons you can carry forward into other areas of your life.    Daniel Cakora here again to share some reflections.     Vendavo offers 16 hours of annual paid volunteer time to each employee so we can all give back to causes that matter to us. But this is something my family does outside of that.    This year I volunteered for the Jackson Chance Foundation, and this one really hit home for me. Jackson Chance Foundation assists families with NICU-bound children by covering parking fees. My son spent a significant amount of time in the NICU, so I know what that’s like.     Not having to worry about expensive parking fees during such a trying time was a weight off our shoulders for my wife and me. It gave us the freedom to visit our son, step away to run errands, and come back to spend more time with him – all without additional financial stress layered atop everything else.     This cause means so much to us that we set aside money on birthdays and the anniversary of our son’s “come home day” to make contributions.    There are little lessons like that everywhere. Openings for solutions that can help make others’ days a little less stressful or a little easier.
