THERE'S SOO MANY DICKS! Seriously: did you know that men named Richard, Rick, or Dick (Dicks) outnumber women and diverse groups on public company boards? It's time to Change the Board Game. There are too many Dicks and not enough of everyone else. We combed through each board of directors of U.S. based companies on the NYSE and NASDAQ, all 36,957 existing board members across 4,429 publicly traded U.S. companies. The data is astounding: 🔍 There were 566 men named Richard, Rick, or Dick (Dicks) serving on these public company boards. 🔍 Black women and Asian women barely outnumber men named Dick, with only 806 Black Women, 774 Asian Women. 🔍 There were only 283 Hispanic Women on these same boards, only half the number of “Dicks”. I had the privilege to participate in an enriching session at Serta Simmons Bedding, LLC, as part of their celebration and learning during #HispanicHeritageMonth. The discussion revolved around key insights that I'm excited to share with all of you. Here are the main takeaways: 1.      Lessons from My Latina Awakening: I shared personal experiences and lessons from my journey, shedding light on the beauty of embracing one's heritage and the power it holds in our lives. It's about turning our differences into distinctions into unique strengths. 2.      Understanding Assimilation, Acculturation, and Affirmation: We explored the distinctions between these terms, recognizing that embracing diversity means respecting each person's unique path. 3.      Summary of the 5 Dualities of Diversity & Inclusion: We delved into the richness of developing and inclusive mindset and leadership behaviors, about connecting through our similarities and learning from our differences to foster a culture of respect, care and positive impact. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the amazing hosts, Ritika Singh and Esther Ni, for making this session possible. It was a pleasure and honor to share this conversation with your colleagues, leadership team and members of your board of directors. That is what having massive positive impact is all about! According to data from the University of Illinois, out of 97 corporations based in Illinois that filed board diversity reports, 35 indicated they had no Black or African American board members. In this recent ranking chart from Crain's Chicago Business, Adtalem ranks #1 in Illinois for Board Diversity, and as of January 2023, our Board of Directors is 64% gender, ethnically and racially diverse. This is just one example of how our organization makes #diversity, #equity and #inclusion an intentional part of our business strategy from the top down.  https://lnkd.in/gsmAgESk

Responsibility to not only lead, but elevate By Andre Arbelaez On behalf of the HC3-Hispanic C-Suite Corporate Council , I congratulate every man and woman on the Latino Leaders Magazine list to acknowledge the incredible accomplishment as leaders, not only in their company, not only in their industry, but as leaders in Corporate America. We are leaders that happen to be of Hispanic Heritage. It is our professional and social responsibility to not only lead, but create a pathway for others in our companies, our organizations, and our community.  That objective should be clear to every executive on the list as we celebrate them, we must also be accountable as it eventually leads a pathway for our children, our legacy, our future. The Hispanic C-Suite Corporate Council (HC3) is the premier organization for Hispanic Leaders in Corporate America. Our mission via the Push Up Pull Up theme is to increase the number of successful Hispanic executives by delivering value to their development, leadership, and philanthropic endeavors thereby strengthening their companies, organizations, and communities.  Our mantra “Advocacy, Accountability, Appreciation” will help elevate executives, ensure they value their identity, and recognize their greatness. As of 2023, the Hispanic community has 20 Fortune 500 Hispanic CEO’s, and our goal is to assist in the elevation of the total to match our national population percentage, which is now at a targeted 100 CEO’s. Seleeta Watson is an Enablement Manager at Computacenter. She supports a large corporate financial institution as a Diversity Programme Consultant for their Supply Chain Diversity Programme and is a devoted advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion. Seleeta took home our Workplace Hero Award at our ceremony earlier this month. We recently caught up with her as part of our Past Winner Spotlight feature. Q: Who has inspired you the most? A: My grandmother. Her resilience, grace, determination and strength in the challenges that she had to overcome still leaves me in awe. Q: What’s your proudest achievement? A: My children. Q: Can you tell us something about your cultural heritage? A: I was raised Rastafarian in a very spiritual household. Q: What for you have been the most important moment for progress/quality? A: Although George Floyd’s passing was a tragedy it has brought about the kind of change that I didn’t think I’d ever witness during my career. Q: What message would you give to your younger self? A: Everyone else’s opinions should not be used as the compass that navigates your own and not everyone will like you and that is perfectly fine. Q: What gives you hope for the future? A: I have always felt that the IT industry is one of the best when it comes to accepting change and people who are diverse but if the last three years are anything to go by I am very excited for the future. #ethnicityawards #diversityandinclusion #progress #equality
