C. C. Crawford Professor of Management & Performance, Associate Professor of Public Policy & Management
Congrats to USC Sol Price School of Public Policy's Esther González for being awarded an Endowed Fellowship by the University of Southern California's Graduate School! Esther's dissertation, “Three Essays on the Analysis of the Impact of Equity Efforts on Local Government Employees and DEI Leaders,” showcases her ability to blend theoretical insights with practical implications, offering innovative solutions to pertinent societal issues, specifically diversity leadership and management practices in local government. In her work, Esther delves into the complex dynamics of representation, shedding light on the superficial inclusion of diverse leaders without genuine empowerment or influence. By highlighting these issues, the dissertation prompts vital discussions on reshaping policies to ensure meaningful representation, equity, and effective decision-making in local governance. Esther's dissertation addresses a systemic flaw, guiding policy reforms that genuinely advance diversity, inclusion, and social justice in governmental structures. Understanding tokenization's nuances informs policymakers about the limitations of current diversity initiatives, urging the reevaluation of strategies for authentic inclusion. I couldn't be prouder of Esther, and we're all looking forward to the impact she will have on the field and in practice! #USCGraduateSchool #diversityandinclusion #socialjustice

“People don’t think about the role of social scientists in Silicon Valley,” says Communication Studies scholar, author, longtime San José State faculty member and now Dean of the College of Social Sciences Anne Marie Todd. “Critical thinkers are vital as we consider the ethical and social implications of technology such as the effects of a tech-driven society on our communities. The social sciences play a large part in these conversations; we need to do a better job of framing that idea, not only for students, but for the rest of the community.” Learn more about Todd’s vision for the college in the latest Deep Dive in Five: https://buff.ly/3PxsxMd

"CAMPAIGNING FOR THE CONSTITUTION" kicks off this summer's "Campaign Management" course at George Mason University - Schar School of Policy and Government. Our speaker was Dr. Michael Cornfield, a Senior Fellow at The GWU Center for Excellence in Public Leadership. His research and consulting practice focuses on “simulated summits,” three-hour table-top exercises to enhance the political narrating and negotiating skills of students and mid-level government and corporate officers. He is the author of two books: Politics Moves Online: Campaigning and the Internet and The Civic Web: Online Politics and Democratic Values, co-edited with David M. Anderson. He addressed the class on two subjects: 1. The campaign for the U.S. Constitution (and lessons learned); 2. The evolution of "Political Consulting" as a profession. Dr. Cornfield was terrific! And we all learned from your presentation. Thank you.

Progressive Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Change Agent, Strategy-Driven Success Coach, Championing "Uncovering" & Belonging, Self & System Assessment; Intentionally Fostering Psychological Safety
Fifty-three years ago, The Honorable Ketanji Brown Jackson was born. She took her oaths of office to serve on the highest court in the land on June 30, 2022. Last year, Justice Jackson delivered an emotional and empowered dissenting opinion on the issue of using race in university admissions. She was in the minority with her vote; however, her words and wisdom are worth acknowledging on this day and every day moving forward. If you have not had the opportunity to look into her mind and see how it works, as equity leaders, it is worth studying this document and using it as an ethical compass in terms of decisions regarding people, policy, practice, and access. Why not learn from one of the greatest minds in the Supreme Court? Despite the fact that the Highest Court did not align with her precise, logical, and historical position, it does not mean that WE do not have to. Every one of us who is in the position to lead, can honor the principles that Justice Jackson outlined in her decision with our actions, policies, initiatives, defiance of status quo, critical evaluation of who is favored in our settings, and whose voices are centered in conversations and decision-making? Could the hierarchy use some flattening? How do we create more seats at the table using strategies that are authentic to various stakeholders and not limited to the people who are doing the inviting? Then, when the majority of stakeholders in the room are gravitating toward one direction of thought, how do you have a plan of action ready to go in your back pocket for being that dissenting voice when it is needed most? I acknowledge the Honorable Justice Ketanji Onyika Brown Jackson today, and every day, with not just words, but with my actions and practice as a leader, educator, dissenter, and advocate.
