As a proud Latino Aggie, and DEI advocate, I find myself both perplexed and disappointed by the latest events at Texas A&M University, the largest public university in our nation.
Six core values lie at the heart of what Texas A&M represents: loyalty, integrity, excellence, leadership, respect, and selfless service. While the mission of preserving, protecting, and perpetuating the Texas Aggie Culture is admirable on the surface, a closer examination reveals an uncomfortable truth.
Recent political interferences have begun to overshadow these core values, creating a rift in the very fabric of our educational community. With a rapidly growing population of diverse students, including over 25 percent who are Latino, our university should be a beacon of inclusivity and empowerment.
But, instead, the shadow of politics looms large, threatening to undermine the growth and progress we have fought so hard to achieve. The impact on the vibrant and diverse student body, who should be the university's primary focus, cannot be ignored.
I implore the leadership of Texas A&M University to remember its core values, to resist the political pressures that risk compromising our integrity, and to recommit to fostering an environment where every student, regardless of their background, can thrive.
