Due to ongoing FAFSA delays, dozens of colleges all across the U.S. are postponing their commitment deadlines for accepted students. College Decision Day is typically May 1, but more than 80 colleges and universities have pushed back their deadlines because they still haven't received the financial information that they need from the Department of Education to craft their financial award packages for incoming students. Incoming students need to know how much college is going to cost them before committing to enroll. But experts say they won't find out until late March or April — possibly later. Some colleges are even creating their own financial aid forms to send out award letters without waiting of the Education Department. My latest in Money lays out which colleges are pivoting and what families can do if they're stuck in FAFSA limbo. #FAFSA #HigherEd #FinancialAid #CollegeAdmissions #litrendingtopics https://lnkd.in/eD4AU5Dq

FAFSA season = Wyatt season! Thrilled that Wyatt, Benefits Data Trust's digital FAFSA advisor is featured in this The Wall Street Journal story about the challenging realities of college financial aid this year. Neeta Sonalkar, can I have your autograph? "[Wyatt's] most frequently asked questions are relatively simple: What is FAFSA? Why do I have to fill it out? When is it due? 'These are not complex questions but they are really door openers for students who don’t know what it means to fill out this kind of application,' said Neeta Sonalkar, BDT’s director of higher education innovation."
Applying for college financial aid is always stressful. This year there is an entirely new Fafsa form and a much shorter deadline, writes Oyin Adedoyin:

🎓 Transcript Withholding Policies Please take a moment to read the insights from Texas Appleseed's latest report on the impacts of transcript withholding policies in Texas. While intended to collect unpaid debts from former students, this practice has proven ineffective. Interesting Findings: 📣 Ineffectiveness in Debt Collection: Only 7 cents on the dollar are collected from outstanding debts through transcript withholding. 🔎 Disproportionate Impact: Individuals of color are significantly more affected by these policies. 🚧 Barriers to Progress: Most college debts belong to no longer enrolled individuals, with many debts over five years old, blocking their access to further education and employment opportunities. #Education #HigherEd #TexasPolicy #StudentDebt #ORSTX #Collegeforall

Parents paying tuition for two or more children in college may lose some financial aid under new government rules. For years, the calculation for federal financial aid took into account a family’s income and assets, as well as the number of children attending school. Changes to the formula for the 2024-25 academic year intend to make more students eligible for federal aid like Pell Grants. But that means parents won’t get a break for having multiple children in college since the new formula looks at family members individually instead of as a family unit. However, the new system will give many students more access to federal financial-aid grants. #financialaid #StudentLoans #FAFSA #collegeaid #college

Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) and Jim Banks (R-Ind.) introduced the No Tax Dollars for College Encampments Act on Monday to challenge the accreditation status for schools that fail to follow their policies to prevent tent encampments, the occupation of academic buildings and other illegal measures. The legislation would require colleges to increase transparency by revealing civil-disturbance response plans, increasing coordination with various law enforcement and ensuring compliance to continue receiving federal funds.
