Student teaching is hard, especially when you're not getting paid and have to support yourself and your family. That's why it's crucial to support Illinois' proposed law, which would pay student teachers. Signing this witness slip would provide equitable access to student teaching for potential teachers of all different financial backgrounds and needs. This law would also help to address our teacher shortage across Illinois. Student teaching should be a time to learn in community with veteran teachers, without the stress of figuring out how to pay your bills. Let's work together to make student teaching accessible to all aspiring teachers. Sign the witness slip today! #IllinoisTeachers #StudentTeaching #EquitableAccess #TeacherShortage https://lnkd.in/gGkvvCxg

From The Daily Signal: "In an explosive report by the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, William Flanders analyzed data from Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction and revealed that the sudden tidal wave of new students displaced by the end of school choice would have overwhelmed the state’s public schools, severely compromising the quality of education available to Wisconsin students. For example, the Milwaukee Public Schools would have gone from a surplus of more than 20,000 seats to a deficit of more than 17,000—necessitating the immediate purchase or construction of at least 17 new school buildings. Likewise, to maintain its current student-teacher ratio, Milwaukee Public Schools would have needed to hire almost 2,400 additional teachers—a nearly 57% increase in its current teaching staff." https://lnkd.in/gWNws3X7 #wisconsin #schoolchoice #supremecourt #educationforall #educationreform #parentalchoice #parentalcontrol #studentsuccess #studentsfirst

Attorney and Counsellor at Law, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, State of Connecticut, State of New York
#MassSJCUpdate: And newly confirmed Justice Gabrielle Wolohojian, sitting as #singlejustice, just reserved and reported two challenges to the #BallotInitiatives proposing to abolish the #MCAS exam (full court docket numbers not yet available, likely SJC-136__) https://lnkd.in/ehDVUaGH https://lnkd.in/eJcixyUf The reservation and report fast tracks the case (challenger's brief due on May 29, AG's Brief due on June 5, any replies/ #amicuscuriae briefs on June 10.) But the reservation and report suggests that the Court may decide these cases without oral argument so the Secretary of the Commonwealth can meet a July 1 deadline. That prospect bothers me. Granted, #ballotinitiative challenges are thorny. But the rest of the #ballotinitiative challenges saw oral argument. Moreover, the odds here could not be higher. There are an unusual number of voters making this challenge. This decision on whether this goes on the ballot has major implications for #publiceducation throughout the Commonwealth-and consequences for generations of students, who have already endured serious upheaval in light of #COVID19. Stay tuned. #Educationlaw #ElectionLaw #ReformStandardizedTesting #SmashtheSchooltoPrisonPipeline #Childrenareourfuture #JuvenileLaw #SchoolLaw #GoodGovernment

ICYMI: Stand Together Trust's Steve Taylor offered brilliant advice on how we have conversations surrounding the 2024 election and higher education policies. "It sounds so simple, but I think providing a space for individuals, students, and faculty to disagree better and lean into the tension and discomfort because you’re still going to be uncomfortable. Having a safe space where you can lean into that disagreement and talk about it is key." Listen to the panel: https://bit.ly/3ToAcyd
