Today, the European Parliament voted to adopt the #EUAIAct, a significant milestone for responsible #AI regulation in Europe and across the globe. The EU AI Act takes a risk-based approach focusing on regulating use cases, not algorithms. This ensures consumers and businesses are protected from harm while society can still reap the benefits of AI. Now it’s critical that the U.S. considers the same precision regulation approach to AI at the federal level. While it’s clear that AI will reshape our economy and lives, it is not yet clear whether the benefits of AI will be broadly shared or controlled and doled out by just a few big stakeholders. The U.S. has the opportunity to play a leading role in creating a future with responsible, open AI innovation and regulation that provides clear guidance on risks based on end-use that strengthens transparency, trust, and accountability.

The government’s interim response following consultation on its discussion paper on “Safe and Responsible AI in Australia” has today been released. Australia now appears unlikely to follow the EU’s lead in implementing an all-encompassing AI Act. Instead it will focus on developing mandatory guardrails for AI development and deployment in high-risk settings. This will be achieved through changes to existing laws or the creation of new AI-specific laws to address certain high-risk settings. Consultation is to continue. In the interim, businesses should remain focused on robust AI governance, including a better understanding of AI use cases and effectively managing the associated risks.
