ADRs (American Depositary Receipts) have been commonplace in financial markets for a long time, dating back to 1927, when the first ADR was created. Today, Receipts Depositary Corporation (RDC) has launched the first-ever Bitcoin depositary receipt (BTC DR). This will give institutional investors access to Bitcoin securities through US regulated market infrastructure and cleared through the Depository Trust Co. Market structure evolution in crypto (and broader alternative assets) will come in large part through partnership with financial institutions. Congrats to the team at Receipts Depositary Corporation (RDC) & Wall Street (Citi) veterans Ankit Mehta, Bryant Kim, & Ishaan Narain, CFA on building an innovative solution for crypto market infrastructure and we at Broadhaven Ventures by Broadhaven Capital Partners are excited to work alongside the team and a fantastic investor group Franklin Templeton & BTIG to help build institutional-quality solutions for crypto and alternatives. https://lnkd.in/e62Qqqma

Institutional investors have toyed with the cryptocurrency markets for years. Where they are actually committed is to the wider digital asset markets, including both asset-backed and digitally native security tokens and digital forms of currency such as tokenised deposits, Stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs). Come and join Future of Finance (FOF) on September 6th along with SIX Digital Exchange and GK8 and others to discuss how this is creating a demand for institutional-grade digital asset custody services, complete with regulated status, insurance cover and cyber-security assurances. . If you are a digital asset custodian, a traditional custody bank, a sub-custodian, a regulator, an investor, a central securities depository (CSD) or a traditional or digital exchange, or an asset manager or asset owners either active in digital asset markets are planning to become so, you need to join this discussion. Last week at ETH Denver, Bespoke Group and I had some conversations with crypto custodians about custody fees. We know paying to custody assets is a little bit foreign to advisors in the US. My local bank custodies my dollars for free. And traditional custodians like Schwab and Fidelity custody my stocks and investments for free. So why do I have to pay for crypto custody? The reason traditional institutions do it for free is because they’re lending my assets and earning interest on them. We’re not paying for it, because we’re the product! And for a long time, being a product for these institutions wasn’t a problem. Until we started having banks collapsing, because they took too much risk. It happened in 2008, and again in 2023 with the collapse of Silvergate and Silicon Valley Bank. So, when a crypto custodian charges you for custody, it’s an assurance your assets will not be commingled with other clients or the bank’s assets. It’s an assurance that when you go to them asking for your assets, they’re there and not locked in some DeFi protocol earning yield. Crypto will bring back the idea of paying a small fee for custody. It will bring back the idea of prioritizing true ownership over costs!
