Celebrating the Voices of Inclusivity! In honor of International Women's Day, we're spotlighting some of the brilliant minds driving inclusivity within MCN. Today, we're thrilled to introduce you to Elifsu Tufan (Serin), CEO at McCANN Istanbul. When asked about the benefits of fostering a culture of inclusivity, Elifsu shared her powerful perspective: What does inclusivity mean to you, and how have you experienced its importance in your journey within our organization? In McCann's Istanbul office, 75% of the employees are women. This wasn't a conscious decision; rather, all of our employees are with us because they excel in their roles. We also have people of different religions and sexual orientations. We don't emphasize these differences. Inclusivity isn't a particular obsession for us; it's simply a natural aspect of our workplace culture. We're content with how things naturally unfold, and that brings us great happiness. How do you believe fostering a culture of inclusivity benefits both individuals and the overall success of our organization? The biggest threat, especially for creative industries, is monotony. A boring environment does not nurture us. There should also be contrasting ideas. Individuals with completely different backgrounds should be able to work together. It saddens me that women’s rights remain a pressing issue today. Therefore, I don't look at it as gender inclusion, but as inclusion for all kinds of thoughts and preferences. In your opinion, what actionable steps can companies take to ensure that all voices are heard and valued, fostering a truly inclusive environment? First of all, the perspective of the management team should change. They should have the foresight to assemble teams comprising individuals with diverse perspectives. Initiatives like MCN's "Day for Meaning" are very valuable. I found them very beneficial and made notes for myself, as a manager. 8 March: Happy International Women’s Day. #inspireinclusion is the theme for this year. For me that’s one of the first things any company needs. I was taught this still valuable way of thinking by Adam Travis. Thank you for shaping my view on Inclusion and Diversity. Without a team accepting everyone’s perspectives, not everyone will feel valued. Inclusive companies are more likely to create a workforce that reflects a variety of backgrounds and experiences. If you are a good representation of your community, this will help you succeed as a company. To this day we still see proud summaries of successful workshops, team meetings and so on, yet looking at them closely we miss representation of everyone in their community. I wonder how this can be truly successful as you probably haven’t discussed all possibilities, simply because you probably couldn’t consider all options. Totally making an assumption here, but that meeting could be called successful, because there was an easy agreement in the direction to take, with many like-minded people in the room. May I suggest that in your next meeting we look at people in the room and think; do we have everyone around the table to make the right decision, because you are able to consider all options? This question we answered in our Diversity Celebration 2024 • For this year's Diversity Day we got together to discuss topics concerning AI-solutions, gender equality, Diversity and Belonging and how we can use new technologies like GenAI in a responsible manner, while at the same time not stopping the progress and speed of adoption. • In Austria, Switzerland and Germany more then 100 colleagues have been driving 18 tremendous I&D projects and gave us the hard task to choose the 3 winning projects for our Equality Award. • At Accenture DACH we foster a culture and a workplace in which all our people feel a sense of belonging, are respected, and are empowered to do their best work and create 360° value for all our stakeholders. • We expect our leaders at all levels to help create and sustain a culture of belonging where everyone can achieve their professional and personal aspirations. This International Women’s Day is all about inspiring inclusion. So, what does inclusion mean to me? Inclusivity isn’t straightforward or simple, it can mean different things to different people, and sometimes that can create friction between groups with different priorities. This means that inclusivity isn’t easy, it takes hard work. It requires introspection: recognising our own preconceptions and biases, and it requires openness: being ready to have those preconceptions challenged. Inclusion requires empathy and solidarity, so that we can all work together to lift one-another up. Inclusivity means celebrating our differences, cheering for the achievements of our peers, being inspired by the achievements of those we wish to emulate, and giving encouragement to anyone who needs help or support in reaching their goals.
