Adversarial techniques to trick image classifying AI aren't new; indeed, there are some quite famous examples like knitted jumpers being handed to citizens by anti surveillance groups with a specific pattern on them designed to trick facial recognition algorithms. But such tools have never really become truly widespread either... this may change with the very high level of dissatisfaction from artists toward the growing wave of generative AI image synthesisation algorithms like DALL-E-3 and others. https://lnkd.in/gDTQKBpu

This decision will shape the use of AI and the future of media.

It will be interesting to see if these posioning techniques generalise across different ML approaches. While some techniques have to date worked across multiple architectures, it's also true that researchers haven't actually had to prioritise resistance to adversairal content yet.

https://lnkd.in/eNfdvjiS This is a large first push for AI! this ruling can set a precedent for AI art usage in larger media and work on the basis of recognition! to be fair, this is a factor taken into account for most of these cases, but with this decision, we may see a lot more AI generated work coming out of larger companies. I mentioned in a recent ZN podcast interview that the hot issue of copyright and AI systems would burst into public consciousness in 2024. The thorny issue has been bubbling below the surface since AI-generated imagery and OpenAI GPT became the 'next big thing' in late 2022. The issue at large is who owns the future. Literally. AI renders our existing political, administrative, legal, creative - and yes - moral frameworks no longer fit for purpose because they were borne out the needs of 18th-century Industrial Revolution thinking. Not for the 21st century, and beyond. Many perceive my declaration of AI as a paradigm shift as a hyperbole. Possibly. But 'who owns what 'underpins our Western democratic, rules-based order and AI's very existence is a threat to entrenched monolithic structures that will fight tooth and nail to retain profitable power with recourse to the courts with antiquated copyright laws. But then again, so will Big Tech. Let the games begin. #AI #copyright #societyandculture #legal #futurism
