I was happy to suggest this Tour de France-themed example for Christian Hunt's excellent Compliance In The Wild series and I loved how Christian expertly analysed it. When you are a support rider or "domestique" in the Tour de France - the world's most gruelling sporting event - riding an individual time trial stage, the most competitive thing you can do for your team is to conserve energy - and while extremely rare, that can coincide with a very touching moment like in the example here. The Union Cycliste Internationale deemed that a breach of their rules (and/or possibly a brilliant PR move for the sport given the attention this incident received?). The concept of "in the wild" is hugely important when we think about rules, processes, decisions, and other interactions that will inevitably involve people behaving in various settings. What may seem like a good idea in an office, even "work" in a laboratory setting, may not be such a good idea when observed in practice - or vice versa. “Strong” is not the same as “Not weak.” During mating season, full-grown male, big-horned rams spend their day fighting for dominance, by racing at each other at 64km/hr, and crashing into each other. Being able to withstand the fight against another ram at 64km/hr, however, doesn’t mean you’re strong — it just means you’re not weak. Strong, means you are able to make a change. Not weak, means you are able to survive. This is an important distinction of course, because each uses a different strategic infrastructure. “Not weak” brands are great with getting Repeat Business. Strong brands are able to unify its customers towards intentional and scalable word-of-mouth — resulting in profitability and growth driven by radical authenticity.
