Across Europe cities are working to become climate neutral. This includes switching to renewable energy sources, reducing energy consumption, improving the energy efficiency of their building stock and the electrification of transport and mobility. Projects like +CityxChange help cities with this transition. Together with project partners and representatives from our other partner cities, I visited our partner city Võru in Estonia. Above all, it was a meeting between cities who want to learn from each other.
The people from Võru shared with us their challenges, learnings, and solutions. Their actions are diverse. From establishing a city vision for 2050 to managing the renovation of their public buildings, stimulating private building owners to invest in their buildings, improving mobility, making Võru the most child-friendly city, and keep the city attractive for future generations. While the cities involved in the project differ in many ways, similarities are found in the challenges they face. Like how to fund these activities, how to engage and involve citizens in the transition, or how to get their city administration and politicians aligned and involved.
This transition impacts many areas: The social domain, technology, business models, financial structures, organisational culture. Part of my job in the project is to explore how we can replicate solutions to other cities. One of the learnings is that we do not so much need to copy solutions or technologies but concepts, methodologies, and processes. The cities can use them to develop solutions tailored to their own context, needs and desires.
Projects like this bring me to places I couldn’t imagine and have me value the diversity of countries and cultures within Europe. In Võru we got the pleasure of experiencing their traditional smoking sauna, listed in UNESCO’s ‘Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’. I feel privileged being part of this research community and to meet all these wonderful smart, creative, and committed people from all different countries and organisations. A big thank you to Siim Meeliste & Tiina Hallimäe and their team for their hospitality and warm welcome.
