"Inclusive"and "Sustainable" "access" and "utilization"... Power of words, buzzwords must translate. Let us know what we really mean! We must be articulate. e.g "Access" for who, why and under what circumstances? Equity, sustainability... all must mean something objective for all. These words from Prof Hans C. Komakech resonated very well also with our earler discussions here. Below are some further points from his Keynote: Main challenges despite water abundance in Uganda: wetland degradation and pollution. Therefore, better water utilization is required. Especially because: - 120,000ha of forest lost to charcoal production per year, limited clean fuel, 0.6% - Uganda is also struggling from climate impacts While there are claims of better water policies; - Are they unimplementable? - Are we rearranging deck chairs on a sinking Titanic? A focus on WASH systems strengthening will be necessary. For water for food production; - Only 1% of potential 3million ha is developed in Uganda - Rainfed agriculture also has potential where abundant What could be done? - Plan for land and water management - promote fit for purpose technologies eg demand responsive services... ...among others. #Pref4Wash Sandec-Eawag #water #UWEWK24

👀 NEW POLICY BRIEF FOR KENYA: In this policy brief we discuss the impacts of #charcoal bans and restrictive supply-side legislations in hashtag #Kenya, highlighting how livelihood producers are disproportionately impacted by them. The brief was written by Rebecca Clube, Emmanuel Cyoy, Meron T., and Noah Mayieka. Africa is off track from achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) target for universal access to clean cooking by 2030. This is due to lack of prioritization from national governments, developmental financial institutions, private sector representatives, donors, and households. Approximately 280 million people need access to clean cooking options per annum as it is estimated that almost 500,000 Africans die by household air pollution every year. Unfortunately, the challenges imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic increased the number of people without access by 1% between 2019 and 2021. Delighted to share this new policy brief that summarises research exploring the recent landscape for charcoal regulation in Kenya. We highlight that punitive supply-side interventions may have unintended negative consequences for livelihood charcoal workers, whilst failing to address high demand for charcoal. BURN's Head of Carbon Strategy Molly Brown was recently interviewed by KTN News, discussing the impact of carbon projects and clean cooking solutions in Kenya.  Recently, Kenya took a significant step towards facilitating quality carbon trading by passing carbon market regulations which will enable project developers like BURN to continue attracting foreign investment to make clean cooking affordable.  BURN has distributed ~4.5 million clean cookstoves across Sub-Saharan Africa, and with carbon finance we can subsidize stoves that would normally cost ~$50 on the market for ~$3-5. This blueprint provides a long-term view of the likely evolution of the sector’s finances and lays out practical ways to ensure its financial sustainability. Our team is proud to continue our humanitarian work, providing access to safe drinking water through our local solutions that are easy and sustainable at both household and community levels. Recently, we had visitors from the German embassy in Sierra Leone who joined us to check on the sustainability and user satisfaction of our systems in remote communities. We walked over 2 miles to reach areas that are not motorable, to ensure we can adapt and implement our system in deprived rural communities. We believe that using local water solutions is the long-term solution to local water problems. Imported water solutions have proven to be unsustainable, and often leave communities worse off. We advocate and sell the idea of using local water solutions to deprived rural communities, as it is not only sustainable, but it empowers the people themselves to address their water problems. Together, we can make a difference and provide safe drinking water to those who need it most.
