President of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and Mott MacDonald Professor of Future Mobility at UWE Bristol
I wanted to know what AI makes of Triple Access Planning. Having asked Copilot to provide concise definitions of transport planning and of TAP it then suggested I ask it “How is Triple Access Planning different from traditional transport planning?”. Here’s the answer it gave. Triple Access Planning (TAP) diverges from traditional transport planning in several key ways: 1️⃣ Holistic Approach: ⚫ TAP considers not only physical mobility (like roads and transit) but also spatial proximity (land-use planning) and digital connectivity (telecommunications systems). 🔴 Traditional transport planning often focuses primarily on physical infrastructure without integrating these other dimensions. 2️⃣ Resilience and Adaptability: ⚫ TAP aims for robustness by addressing uncertainties and dynamic changes in urban environments. 🔴 Traditional planning may not always account for future disruptions or adapt well to evolving needs. 3️⃣ User-Centric Design: ⚫ TAP emphasises user experience, ensuring convenient access to essential destinations. 🔴 Traditional planning may prioritise efficiency over user needs. 4️⃣ Collaboration and Integration: ⚫ TAP encourages collaboration among transport, land-use and digital planning sectors. 🔴 Traditional planning often operates in silos, hindering seamless integration. 👉 In summary, TAP envisions a more interconnected, adaptable, and user-friendly urban mobility system, transcending the limitations of traditional approaches! Notwithstanding that TAP applies to rural as much as urban mobility, it did a pretty good job! 📢 You’ll find below a video presentation that introduces TAP and the Handbook. I hope it’s helpful. Please share with others. Yesterday we had the final 😢 online gathering of partners in the Triple Access Planning for Uncertain Futures project. Geert Koops rather beautifully summed up why he is drawn to TAP, explaining that it is simultaneously intellectually challenging and easy to understand! He also said “it opens a door in your brain”. Psychology of architecture | Helping to create places for good life and meaningful work | Consultant | Educator | Speaker | Writer - on a summer break from social media.
📐 I see a risk in using algorithmic and AI tools to "optimize" cities. Not because technology couldn't support urban planning to increase human flourishing in the future, but because... ...today these models and their creators focus on technical measures that don't reflect human psychological and social needs. They usually optimize for efficiency, savings, utilization, and other measures that can be easily calculated. 🌳 But a city is a living organism, not a machine. It's a human system first. And even if we optimized for the measures that best describe human well-being and quality of life, we would still have to provide for the human need for control and choice. People need to feel that they can influence the things that happen around them. The community needs to make decisions about its territory in order to thrive. Any top-down planning that doesn't involve a real and impactful process of co-creation and participation is not going to make people happy. 🗿 And it's not just about making people feel that way. When citizens shape their environment together, the result is often much better suited to their needs. It leads to more authentic, humane places that are not only more pleasant to live in, but also more interesting to visit and explore. When we help real estate developers, municipalities, and communities facilitate these bottom-up, co-creative processes with my colleagues at theLivingCore, we can clearly see the difference in both the results, efficiency of the process, and in the enjoyment of everyone involved. #urbanplanning #participation #cocreation #ai #realestatedevelopment
